It’s actually looking worse than week 5 or even week 6 for Penn State. Things have gone from bad to worse for Penn State as quarterback Drew Allar suffered an injury late in the contest against Northwestern. Not only the Penn State unofficially ended their season with the 3rd loss of the season, With Penn State down 22-21 with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Allar scrambled on a third-down play and was tackled short of the first down marker. He didn’t get up initially, and medical personnel came to check on him as the Beaver Stadium crowd went dead silent.

Allar eventually stood up, but he was clearly limping as he made his way to the sideline. Backup quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer came in to replace him, but Penn State failed to convert on the next fourth-down attempt. Northwestern then got the ball back and ran out the clock to secure the 22–21 victory.
After the game, TV cameras showed Drew Allar being taken off the field in a cart, and one of his shoes was off. This made people think he might have hurt his leg or foot. The loss made Penn State’s record even worse — they are now 0–3 in Big Ten games. The team is having a hard season, and now they have to wait to find out how serious Allar’s injury is.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar had a tough game, throwing for only 131 yards with one interception (red zone) while completing 13 of 20 passes. Fans expected more from him since he was once projected as a possible top 5NFL Draft pick. What makes this even worse; this is their third straight loss, and the home crowd at Beaver Stadium began booing and chanting “overrated.” In the post-game press conference, James Franklin delivered even worse news: “Drew will be done for the year.” In some ways, it doesn’t really matter, since they’re technically out of playoff contention.

The loss left Penn State with a 3-3 record and 0-3 in the Big Ten, something that hasn’t happened since 2004. Even though it was Homecoming weekend, the usual excitement was gone. Many of the 108,000 fans were angry and disappointed, calling for coach James Franklin to be fired as the team’s season continued to fall apart.
Fans are concerned about Drew Allar’s season-ending injury
As soon as CBS Sports posted this on their social media, fans obviously came with pitchforks, but they also showed remorse for Drew Allar. Fans started with a career-saving hack for Drew Allar: “Hate to see any injury, but this is honestly probably the best-case scenario for him to get a medical redshirt this year, come back next year. Don’t get me wrong, Allar will still suck next year, but his stock is at an all-time low now.” This makes absolute sense. A medical redshirt would actually be the best-case scenario here. Penn State’s got nothing to lose now since they are already out of the playoff picture. This lets him preserve a year of eligibility since the injury came early in the season, giving him time to fully heal and reset without burning a year of bad tape.
Another fan commented, “Awww poor baby!” You have to feel for Drew Allar at this point. When Drew Allar entered the 2025 season, many expected him to be the best QB in the country and also a top-five preseason Heisman candidate. Fast forward to Week 7, Drew Allar has pretty mediocre stats — 7 games, 8 touchdowns, 3 picks, and close to 1,100 yards. Now, with every bit of hype drained after today’s loss, Drew Allar should focus on his injury, and Penn State should focus on next season.
Some even said goodbye to Drew Allar’s first-round hype: “He can kiss Round 1 of the NFL Draft goodbye. Terrible QB.” The way things went down this season, it would be surprising to see someone drafting him in anything higher than the fifth round. However, luckily, Drew Allar can dodge this year’s draft and save his existing stock by hitting the redshirt button.
One fan commented, “Hate Penn State but hate to see that too.” Easily understandable. The Nittany Lions entered the 2025 season as the No. 2 team in the nation (AP Poll), even one spot above Ohio State. James Franklin went into the portal and brought in the best receivers available and also snatched one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, Jim Knowles, with a $3.3 million contract. Fast forward to Week 7, they are having the most disappointing campaign in the FBS.

Another fan commented, “Hope he’s ok. This is definitely not the year Drew Allar expected to have.” Allar’s decision to return to Penn State instead of entering the 2025 NFL Draft was viewed as a vote of confidence in his ability to improve and “finish the job.” Ironically, the job finished him. With a few more weeks of college football to go, it’s interesting to see how James Franklin will take things from here — only if he’s not fired first.
