Shane Beamer is going to have his hands full this season as he faces off against some pretty big programs. South Carolina Gamecocks will begin with their opener against Virginia Tech on August 31. The problem is that Beamer is not going to have a cruising time this season since it gets quite tough down the road. The stakes are even higher because he will face off against some familiar programs from last season. However, the schedule lines them up in a way that makes it seriously difficult for the HC to put up a better record than last year’s.

After their opener, the next few games are against South Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Kentucky. Sports Illustrated ranks their schedule as the 7 most difficult, placing it above Kentucky’s. ESPN says that South Carolina has to get going from the opener itself to improve on its last season’s record of 9-4. However, the actual test of the Gamecocks will come in the games lined up right after fall sets. Shane Beamer knows it, too, because that is when the team has to deliver. They win these games, and Beamer can look at a chance of ending up in the top ranks.

On College Football Addiction, insider Jamie Bradford explained how the Gamecocks should ideally fare up until October. He said in an April 4 video that up until the October 11 game against LSU, the Gamecocks have to be 5-0. “They came in the top 15 by that time. They’re probably knocking on the door of the top ten or the top five. And, then you got LSU.” He continued, “Then, Oklahoma comes to town [and] then Alabama comes to town. Then you go to Ole Miss. That’s where your money’s made. That stretch right there.” To get to these important games and also have a chance of being ranked higher up, South Carolina cannot lose a game.

Bradford also said, “You’re gonna figure it out. So, it could be a really unique situation for the Gamecocks when they flip that calendar to October, there’s no question about it.”

ESPN says that the Alabama game will be particularly tough. Last time, they were at Tuscaloosa, but this time, the Gamecocks will be home. Last time, Alabama triumphed over South Carolina, with some devastating plays made just seconds before the game ended. The only win from among these teams last year came against Oklahoma, surprisingly.

Beamer himself knows that this middle order is where he’ll have to bring his best cards to the table. Among them will be LaNorris Sellers, who will be playing his 3 season at South Carolina. However, despite his talents, comparisons with a star player show that the young QB still has some skills to be developed with time.

Beamer, in 2024, decided to get Sellers off the bench and step in as the starting QB. The rookie displayed quite the prowess, making 2,354 passing yards and 18 TDs. That got insider David Pollack comparing him with LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier. He said the South Carolina quarterback still didn’t have what Nussmeier effortlessly showed.

“Nussmeier is exponentially better as a passer. It’s like what Nussmeier can do right now, but LaNorris will never even get to it. He’ll never scratch the surface of what Nussmeier can do. Throwing the football and anticipating and throwing in different windows.” Nussmeier is a veteran at the sport now, and his experience outshines that of Sellers. No doubt, the latter is also good at what he does, but he failed to maximize his talents to their full potential.

Coincidentally, Sellers put up a good show against LSU last season. He suffered an ankle injury and had to leave the field, after which his loss was deeply felt. Garnet and Cocky even go on to claim that if Sellers had not been injured, South Carolina would have had a playoff spot. They lost against LSU 33-36, but it was a close and well-fought loss. Beamer said that he was “proud as heck” of the performance that night.

Sellers won an Offensive Player of the Week award last season, so we know that he’s got it in him. He only has to push himself a little further because his stats show that he is capable of it. With him leading the offense, Beamer has a chance of weathering that crucial middle order of games that will be the ultimate test of his coaching. They were able to withstand some of those games last year. We can only hope that Beamer works to do even better this year and secure wins during this important window in the schedule.
