The Cardinals fell 20–19 to Clemson, and a brutal third-down sack on Miller Moss pushed them to the edge of field-goal range, while Cooper Ranvier’s 50-yard try sailed wide with 4:06 left. But the Cardinals still had a chance. What they didn’t have was discipline; their penalties against the Tigers were costly. Now, following the loss that dropped Louisville to a 7-3 overall record, Moss offered a blunt take on the program’s culture.

In the post-game conference, when the QB was asked about their unsportsmanlike penalties, he put all things on Louisville culture. “I don’t think something like that gets fixed week to week. That’s a culture thing and an off-season thing that’s going to need to be addressed,” said Moss. With that, while frustration is boiling inside Louisville’s fanbase, plenty of supporters on Twitter are calling for him to be gone.

“I agree what he said, and the culture is Jeff Brohm. Miller Moss was bench at USC for a reason so why did Brohm sign him🤷‍♂️. What needs to happen is get a new O cord(which isn’t going to happen) or let Brohm be a free agent,” commented one fan, while another simply put, “Bench Miller Moss.” But that wasn’t all, as when the Cardinals’ HC walked into the stadium, fans were “screaming at Brohm to ‘Bench that bum QB!'” according to Cooper Biven’s tweet.

It came down to the Tigers’ defense facing a struggling Miller Moss. But it wasn’t just Moss; 10 penalties costing 84 yards, including a false start, set the Cardinals back. Perhaps that’s why Moss admitted there’s more work to do. “You’re competitive just getting to the end of the game. You want to do everything you can to win the game. But, I mean, the ultimate competitors have the greatest amount of focus in those moments,” said Moss. “… that’s obviously something that we have to work on.”

Still, in the game against Clemson, the QB managed 19-of-27 for 212 yards. But the offense faltered when it mattered most. After Clemson went three-and-out, a muffed punt gave the Cardinals the ball at the 23-yard line, but penalties pushed them back, right to the edge of field-goal range. To cap it off, Nick Keller was sent in for a 46-yarder, but a high snap turned it into a miss, sealing the loss.

However, did the QB show his full potential? Maybe not. As in the past two games against Virginia Tech and California, Moss went 39-for-66, tossing just one passing TD alongside a rushing score.

While back-to-back defeats under Brohm are rare this season, Louisville’s slim ACC title hopes evaporated after this loss. Considering that, while their performance against Clemson seemed to frustrate Moss, how did the HC and other players react?

Not Miller Moss, but other reactions after the loss

After a 29-26 loss to Cal, Louisville’s heartbreak continued with a loss to Clemson. With that now their conference title hope became thin. Probably, that’s why Jeff Brohm was blunt. “Disappointing loss. Losses hurt. They are supposed to,” said the Cardinals HC. “There were critical mistakes at the end. We have to put our head down, go to work, and play better next week.” But Miller Moss’s HC didn’t hold back from confessing their penalty issue.

“The disappointing ones were the ones after the whistle… our guys need to realize we have to be locked in the entire game,” added Brohm. “If you can’t do the small details, we’re not going to win, especially against good competition. We had our chances and couldn’t finish it off.”

While Louisville held Clemson to 308 yards, special teams turnovers, along with the offensive mistakes, played a key role in the loss. Even players echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the frustration.

LB Antonio Watts said, “We didn’t come out and win, but the next thing should just be to move on… come out next week and try to win that game.” Then, on penalties, Watts added, “We shouldn’t be getting those, but we’ve got to keep our composure and calm each other down. They cost us, and we can’t let that keep happening.”

While the Cardinals know the mistakes, now it’s about learning and bouncing back before their next game.
