As we all recently found out, Texas Longhorns star quarterback Quinn Ewers played the entire 2024 season with a torn oblique muscle, which he suffered in Week 2 against Michigan. Despite the injury, Ewers showed incredible determination, leading the Longhorns to the SEC Championship Game and a semifinal appearance in the College Football Playoff. He threw for an impressive 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns, helping Texas achieve an 11-3 record. Despite struggling with injuries throughout his college career, he managed to put on an impressive show, and now he’s all set to take on the NFL Combine with NFL scouts measuring his every move. But there’s more…
The 4th ranked quarterback decided to participate in on-field drills, including throwing, which is a bold move considering many top quarterbacks have opted out. And let’s not forget, he’s got the added pressure of living up to his former status as the No. 1 overall recruit. However, it looks like there’s another challenge – his weight. According to NFL Rookie Watch on X, “Teams are reportedly ‘worried’ about Ewers’ frame given he’s only 209 pounds, and are hesitant to believe he can zip a ball into NFL-type windows.”
Despite having worked with some big-name coaches like Mike McCarthy and Jeff Christensen – who’ve mentored superstars like Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers – Ewers still has to prove himself. He’s planning to “put on a showcase” during the throwing drills, which could either calm people’s concerns or make them even more worried. No pressure, right?

With many scouts not currently grading him as a Top-4 QB, Ewers needs to impress to change the narrative and prove that he can deliver in the NFL.

Concerns surrounding Quinn Ewers ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft
So, it’s not just NFL teams that are worried about Quinn Ewers – analysts like Joel Klatt are also sounding the alarm. Klatt loves Ewers’ potential, but he’s got some concerns that might affect his draft stock. Sometimes, Ewers’ throws look amazing and you think he’s a lock for the top pick, but other times, you’re left wondering if he’ll even make it as a pro starter.
Klatt didn’t sugarcoat the concern on his February 24 podcast. “He does an amazing job throwing with touch, great accuracy, and he throws with touch as well or better than anybody else on the list today,” Klatt admitted and gave props. “Because of that, I do think he can rely on that a little bit too much.” But here’s the problem: Throwing with touch means putting just the right amount of arc and finesse on the ball — perfect for deep shots and lobbing passes over defenders. But sometimes defenders do block the path. Hence what Ewers is relying on too much, isn’t reliable in the first place!

Throwing into tight windows is where Ewers struggles and needs to brush up. He needs to develop more velocity and be willing to drive the ball into tight spaces, especially in intermediate zones. That’s why Klatt thinks Ewers’ chances are less of rising in the draft than some other quarterbacks, like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. It’s not that Ewers doesn’t have potential – it’s just that he’s got some work to do before he’s ready for the NFL.
