College football is all about bold moves for big rewards. Like the iconic line from The Godfather, “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” SMU is making its own game-changing play. The Mustangs are betting big, sacrificing millions in media rights for nine years to join the ACC and chase national recognition. Head coach Rhett Lashlee’s passion is clear—this gamble isn’t just about joining the big leagues; it’s about building a championship legacy. As SMU steps into this ambitious new chapter, Lashlee’s focus is on turning this high-stakes move into a winning reality.

It appears the risk was worthwhile. To sum up, even though SMU lagged behind Clemson last week, they clinched the last playoff spot. A moment to cherish for a lifetime, even coach Rhett Lashlee couldn’t control his emotions and reflected on the risky gamble the team played to reach this place. “It’s special. The commitment here, and just the alignment of everybody wanting us to be great at football again. And knowing that if we’re really good at football and basketball and sports—particularly in a conference like the ACC—it elevates the entire profile of the university,” he said while speaking on the David Pollack College Football show.

Rhett Lashlee seemed quite emotional talking about the sacrifice program alumni’ made to help Mustangs become a program that could join the ACC and compete at the highest level. He also reflected on the challenges and setbacks the university faced. Many players left for Texas and Oklahoma, and they were excluded from major conferences. No wonder it was not an easy way out.

SMU is taking a $200 million gamble that resembles a high-stakes poker game. Moreover, it was not an easy ride to become a part of the ACC; the Mustangs had to take bold steps in order to achieve their desired goal. The team gives up over $200 million in TV revenue. But this effort made their ability to compete with the top teams even stronger. It’s like a strategic risk that relies on the financial support of their billionaire backers.

Moreover, Rhett Lashlee also spoke about how they draw a parallel to the Texas team, which was once considered a small team that earned a spot in the Big 12 conference. “I’d say probably 10 years ago, shortly after TCU went to the Big 12 and really went all in on football with Gary Patterson and that program he built, I think that helped wake a lot of people up here and go, ‘Hold on a minute. If they’re doing that over in Fort Worth, we know what we can do in Dallas. It’s time to get back at it,” he added.

However, this season, under Rhett Lashlee’s guidance, the team successfully proved that SMU’s program can rise to new heights, compete at the highest level, and regain national recognition. And it ultimately showed that this gamble has the potential to become a strategic move worthy of a championship, and their presence in the playoffs is the mere representation of what the team is actually capable of.

Rhett Lashlee’s team in the playoffs

The Mustangs are making history this season. This is their first time in the playoffs. Their success is clearly due to their hard work and dedication to competing at the highest level in the ACC, even when facing financial challenges. That is the reason the Mustangs have always shined in this game.

However, since the playoff ranks came out, there was tension swirling about whether the team would get a spot in the ranks or not. But how can you ignore a remarkable 17-point fourth-quarter deficit that became the turning point for the Mustang’s status in the playoffs over Bama?

Even though the team lost their game against Clemson, it felt like the last nail in their coffin. But that was surely not the case; their dedication and gameplay made them a standout team and forced the committee to choose SMU over Alabama in the playoffs. Knowing what status Bama holds in the game, it was one of the biggest wins in history. Now that the team is in the playoffs, going to play their first round of the game in the quarterfinals against Penn State, it will be interesting to see how Rhett Lashlee makes a win against them.
