The 2025 season has strayed far from the vision Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders brought to Boulder in 2022, when he vowed to restore Colorado’s football prominence. At 3-6, Colorado sits near the bottom of the Big 12 standings, weighed down by back-to-back blowout losses to Utah (53-7) and Arizona (52-17). Now, while the frustration has fueled calls for a coaching change, Boogie Knight has stepped up to reveal the real reason behind Colorado’s growing problems.

On Sunday, Boogie Knight, also known as “Boog,” who has mentored Shedeur Sanders since his fifth grade, and represents the CU alum turned Browns backup, shared his thoughts on Colorado’s future. “Coach Prime will get CU football back to the top,” wrote Boog. “A lot of unforeseen circumstances arose this year. We took it on the chin like a champ. Moving forward, there will be a lot of evolution.”
It is true that your head coach battling health issues can affect more than just strategy. It impacts morale, rhythm, and leadership. For Colorado, that reality has become unavoidable. Deion Sanders endured a difficult offseason in 2025 while confronting bladder cancer, which sidelined him through spring practices before he returned for the season opener against Georgia Tech. Since then, Colorado has managed just 3 wins: against Iowa State, Wyoming, and Delaware. It’s a far cry from the dominance expected of a team with national title dreams.

But now, as health challenges continue to test Sanders, should Colorado consider whether long-term stability requires a coach in full physical form?

Over their last two games, Colorado has been outscored 81–7 in the first halves alone. To make matters worse, the program ranks 104th nationally in total offense, averaging just 329.8 YPG. Naturally, that’s sparked questions about Coach Prime’s job security. But he doesn’t seem to be sweating just yet, as there’s still an opportunity to become bowl eligible if they win their remaining 3 games. And if history offers any lesson, Sanders has shown he knows how to rebuild from adversity. His record speaks for itself.
A 27-6 mark at Jackson State, an undefeated 12-0 run in 2022, and a Colorado debut season that generated over $340 million in media impact. Still, the growing unrest in Boulder has reignited debate about the program’s direction. Addressing that tension, Sanders said, “There’s no more patience in this world. How do we exude patience when we could call up right now and get a pizza delivered right here? Everything is expeditious in this country; everyone wants the quick fix, the quick things.” While rebuilding demands patience, Sanders responded to the mounting struggles with a bold move.
Coach Prime’s newest step for the Buffs ahead of the West Virginia game
After a humiliating loss to Arizona, Coach Prime is making a move at QB ahead of the West Virginia matchup. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Sunday, “Colorado is currently expected to make a QB change and start freshman Julian Lewis versus West Virginia this weekend.” That marks the third different starter under center for the Buffs this season.

Okay, Kaidon Salter, who began the year as QB1, showed flashes with his legs but struggled with consistency, finishing with 1,242 passing yards, while Keelon Russell recorded 65 yards and 2 TDs so far this season. Now, Lewis gets the call, signaling Sanders is preparing for the program’s future. But the numbers paint a stark picture.
Colorado ranks 14th in scoring offense in the Big 12. Now, the team needs wins against West Virginia, Arizona State, and Kansas State to secure bowl eligibility. Still, Sanders remains steadfast in taking a risk.
