Sherrone Morre has solved the QB drama with the master move. Yes, Bryce Underwood looks like the answer that the Wolverines have been searching for throughout the tottering 7-5 season. The 17-year-old nation’s No. 1 QB had committed to the Tigers in January and closed doors on every other school ever since. But money speaks, they say. A bigger NIL offer and the phenom reconsidered his decision. Turning back on Brian Kelly, the Belleville high school QB joined forces with the Wolverines. He’s now attending meetings and seminars and coping with the cultural gap in Ann Arbor. It’s true that he’s the man of the offense, but he can’t do it alone. Michigan needs to support him through another solid QB on the line. Who else are they chasing for?
A couple of On3’s National Recruiting Analysts predicted that Michigan is likely to land former Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., who entered the portal on Thursday. Adding to this update, the Michigan Sports Talk host noted, ”He’s interested in Michigan, and you know, for Michigan’s sake, I mean this is the type of quarterback they are looking for. They got the elite freshman coming in out of Bryce Underwood who’s going to be, competing for that starting job, but right now, Michigan only has Davis Warren, Jadyn Davis, and then the other freshman who is Chase Herbstreit coming in. So, Michigan, they really need another quarterback who’s going to push the younger guys like Jadyn Davis and Bryce Underwood and also compete for the starting job and kind of just relieve some stress off of Bryce Underwood.”

Edwards has been a treat to watch this season. He was initially used as a backup for Taulia Tagovailoa for the first two seasons in Maryland. But he was always worth more. In 2024, Billy Edwards Jr. showcased a lot of versatility. In a remarkable season, the 6-foot-3 prodigy threw for 2,881 yards (65%) and passed for 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He ran for 148 yards and five scores on the ground. Before joining forces with The Terps, he was committed to Wake Forest. His grit and years of experience with the Big 10 will be an asset to bank on for Moore and his squad.
”I like, hopefully Michigan can land him and I think it’s exactly what Michigan needs. Also, a veteran, experienced quarterback who can potentially come in and compete for the starting job and potentially start in the first few weeks of the season if Bryce Underwood isn’t ready, ‘‘ the insider concluded.
Swooping Edwards in will be a safety move for Michigan, as they are already suffering from a lack of quarterback depth. If it’s not taken care of as early as possible, it can lead to a worse call.
Michigan faced two setbacks in the QB panel
Sherrone Moore learned enough lessons from his mistake. He didn’t get that chance to bring in a few big quarterback recruits from last year’s portal, as many of them were already committed elsewhere by the time Moore took the chair. But fans, resentment knows no logic. They kept on throwing shades at him for not paying attention to the portal. This time, Moore might not want to take any risk. While he successfully swooped in $10M Bryce Underwood, on the other side, he is on the verge of losing Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji on the portal. It will hurt the depth chart for sure.

What’s your perspective on:
Can Bryce Underwood handle the pressure, or will Michigan's QB depth issues haunt them this season?
Have an interesting take?
After JJ McCarthy left for the NFL, Moore only had 3 picks: Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, and Davis Warren. Denegal showcased his skills in seven games over his three years in Ann Arbor. While he was rumored to start for the team this season, Moore didn’t do any experiments with him. On December 8th, the former U-M QB announced his intent to leave.
Orji, on the other hand, made his mark in 20 games with three starts across three seasons for the Wolverines. He made immediate headlines as a Davis Warren replacement at the starting spot in the midseason. He hit the portal as the second U-M quarterback after Denegal.
It’s clear that the O-line needs help. Will Billy Edwards Jr. come along and join the fold? Only time will unfold the rest.
