The Wolverines will meet rivals Michigan State this weekend, with both teams having an identical 4-3 record this season. Both teams will be looking for a statement win, with the game promising to be the most competitive outing between the two programs in years. So what can we expect in the Paul Bunyan Trophy clash? Well, the Wolverines for one are baying for blood, according to their junior DT Kenneth Grant.

What else could you expect from the Sherrone Moore’s side that plastered a 15-0 Championship run last year? They also hold a 73-38 record against MI State and have every reason to be confident going into the game against the Spartans. With rivalries such as these, you don’t need a reason to be hyped up, the players are ready and that is what we learned when Grant talked to the media after the evening practice on Tuesday.

Talking about the preparation for the game, Grant said, “Energy has been pretty good.” He then sent a chilling warning to his opponents saying, We are playing for a trophy, so we are trying to keep that trophy and that history here. Just go out there and be violent, and it’s an in-state rivalry, so we gotta come and take their souls.”

These words coming from the 340-pound giant Grant wouldn’t be taken lightly by their rivals. They would not have forgotten the 49-0 drubbing in East Lansing last year.

But so far this season, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Moore. Last weekend’s 7-21 loss at Illinois, one of the Wolverines’ darkest bits in a decade, showed a different side. Moore spoke in a low voice after the game.

Sherron Moore needs ‘more’ to rebuild the old Michigan

Although, the Wolverines head coach’s defensive unit is almost the favorite NFL prospect for the Cowboys. Personally, the journey of Sherrone Moore has been hard. The Wolverines have hit the reset button under Moore’s tenure, and the positive momentum from their national championship-winning season has vanished.

No one is more unhappy about the situation than Moore himself, “I feel disappointed in myself as the head coach that we didn’t come out and execute at a better level,” Coach said. The offense hasn’t really shown up this season- a far cry from what it was during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure.

Moore hasn’t found a quarterback that he can rely on to have a clean game and not gift it to the opposition on a platter. We have seen the young and the old- nothing has worked so far. Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and Jack Tuttle have all been there. What’s next? Only Moore knows the answer to that.

The three losses mean Michigan will be fighting with the season-is-over sentiment for the rest of the way. A tough pill to swallow for a team that is used to playing it big. A Bunyan trophy win could be the catalyst for renewed optimism for Moore and his men.
