The top-ranked prospect in the country is leaving his state to play his final season. For now, he remains committed to the Texas Tech class, but his high school choice caught everyone’s attention.

Jalen Brewster, the consensus No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class, is transferring from Cedar Hill High School in Texas to Buford High School in Georgia. The defensive lineman is making this leap for his 2026 senior season.
Brewster wants to graduate from high school in December 2026. This transfer keeps his academic and athletic plans moving together on the same track.
It also sets up his next big step: early college enrollment in January 2027. Arriving early would allow him to join his future college team for spring practice and support his early development.
Brewster provided clarity on his decision to Rivals. “Transferring to Buford came down to what was best for my future,” Brewster said. “This move allows me to reach my goal of graduating in December while staying on track academically and athletically. I’m grateful for my time at Cedar Hill and excited for what’s ahead at Buford.”
The move makes sense for a player with his goals in mind. Buford is a national powerhouse program. The team went 15-0 in 2025, captured the GHSA Class 6A state championship, and claimed a consensus national title.
Now, Brewster will compete on a big national stage against top-tier competition every Friday night. This will help in his development and also boost his NFL draft stock.
Texas uses UIL rules, while Georgia operates under GHSA rules. For an out-of-state transfer to gain varsity eligibility in Georgia, a bona fide family move with proper documentation is needed.
Brewster’s situation still requires official GHSA verification, and his eligibility is not fully automatic. However, the updated GHSA penalty for a second transfer after ninth grade does not apply here. The move to Georgia appears perfectly designed to solve an academic pathway issue previously reported by 247Sports.
This transfer decision sets off a chain reaction that impacts three different football programs heading into the fall.
What this move means for Texas Tech, Cedar Hill, and Buford
Despite this major life change, Brewster has not decommitted from Texas Tech. He gave his verbal pledge to the Red Raiders on October 4, 2025. He chose them over Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Indiana.
A huge factor in that decision was his relationship with head coach Joey McGuire, who spent years coaching at Cedar Hill. The young star stands as the highest-ranked recruit in modern Texas Tech history.
Even with his verbal commitment in place, Texas Tech cannot afford to relax. His recruitment has remained open, and schools are still pushing hard. He took several visits earlier this year to major programs like LSU, Florida, Texas, and Indiana.
Right now, LSU looks like the primary threat to flip him, with Florida also remaining involved. Moving to a national program like Buford will only increase his exposure to these SEC powerhouse schools.
If Brewster stays committed, his plan to graduate in December will benefit Texas Tech. Enrolling in January 2027 would give him extra months of strength training and college-level coaching before his freshman season.
Cedar Hill now faces a tough challenge. The school loses its best player just days before its season opener against Crowley. Head coach Nick Ward told the Dallas Morning News that the transfer caught him by surprise.
On the other side, Buford gets a defensive superstar right as it starts to defend its national title. The timing is perfect because the program graduated its top seven tacklers from that 2025 championship squad.
