On Wednesday night, tragedy struck near the campus, claiming the life of a promising freshman student-athlete. Details of the incident are still emerging, but what’s clear is the profound impact this loss has had on LSU Athletics. A young athlete, whose journey in purple and gold had just begun, was taken far too soon, leaving teammates, coaches, and fans reeling.

The shocking incident unfolded on Nicholson Drive near South Quad Drive, where Dillon Reidenauer’s Honda Accord was struck by a motorcyclist headed by 23-year-old Bohdi Linton. The impact was catastrophic, with both vehicles erupting into flames upon collision. Neither driver survived. LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier was among the first to pay tribute on his Instagram story on February 27, posting a black and white photo of the freshman pole vaulter from Abita Springs, LA, in remembrance.

Baton Rouge Police reported that Dillon Reidenauer was traveling south on Nicholson Drive and attempted to turn left onto South Quad Drive. And it was at that moment that the BMW motorcycle collided with her vehicle. This loss sent shockwaves throughout LSU with teammates and coaches rallying around the grieving family.

LSU Athletics released a heartfelt statement, expressing condolence to both families and acknowledging the profound impact of the tragedy. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families of both victims, their loved ones, and Dillon’s track & field teammates as we mourn two lives lost too soon.”

Dillon Reidenauer was one of the top prep pole vaulters at Fontainebleau High School, LA. LSU Track & Field HC Dennis Shaver also shared his sorrow in a statement—“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Dillon Reidenauer, who was taken from us much too soon. Everyone in our LSU Track & Field family is keeping Dillon’s loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, as well as those of the other individual lost in the incident.” When tragedy strikes, the LSU family stands together, offering strength in the face of sorrow.

LSU community expresses sorrow over Dillon Reidenauer’s tragedy

Following the tragic development, the LSU community joined hands to express their heartfelt condolences to the 18-year-old. “🙏🏻,” LSU CB DJ Pickett Jr. posted a praying hand emoji to pay tribute to the 5’9 freshman. A promising prospect, Dillon Reidenauer finished the 2024 LHSAA State 5A Championships in the second place clearing with 3.64 meters. Her personal best is an impressive 3.81 meters. She also won the fourth position at the State meet in her junior year. 

In times of loss, words often fall short, and sometimes emoticons say everything. “🕊️💔,” CB Ja’Keem Jackson person posted, a symbol of peace, remembrance, and the fragility of life. A broken heart emoji that spoke to the collective pain felt by the LSU faithful.

Dillon Reidenauer had dreams to be an interior designer, and she was pursuing that degree at LSU. Faith remains the guiding light for many. As seen in DT Ahmad Breaux’s post “✝️.” A quiet yet powerful tribute with the hope that the young Tiger has found peace beyond this life.

The grief was overwhelming, yet the support was unwavering. DE CJ Jackson, echoing the thoughts of many, wrote, “🙏🏻🙏🏻,” a symbol of prayer. Moments like this remind us how quickly life can change. As the LSU family grieves, one thing remains certain: Dillon Reidenauer’s spirit will forever be a part of Tiger Nation.
