Jack Pugh was only 25. For the Badgers community, he was a former 4-star recruit who once carried intrigue into Wisconsin. His football career may not have exploded as expected but he was a teammate who showed up even while battling health issues behind the scenes. His 2023 decision showed how he was still figuring out how to live a better life and find happiness. But that journey came to a sudden, devastating end as confirmed by the school on Tuesday, March 31.

“The Wisconsin Athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh,” the school wrote in a statement. “Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff. Jack proudly earned his degree from UW-Madison in 2025 and will forever be remembered and loved.”
Jack Pugh’s presence at Wisconsin is felt by many despite his lone football game appearance against Minnesota in 2022. But his passing (cause unknown) affects more than one community because his path to Madison wasn’t a conventional one. He wasn’t one of those kids who grew up with football as his main identity. He was also a promising basketball player. At Hilliard Bradley High School in Ohio, he spent his early years on the hardwood until, as he later admitted, something shifted.
“I just kind of got worn out and tired of basketball,” he once said in 2021. “That was my life and I realized that I needed to find something that I’d enjoy more… Football had always been on my mind. I went out there looking to have a good time. I ended up having a great time and falling in love with it.”

Despite limited experience, his size, athleticism, and natural feel for the game turned heads immediately. Offers poured in from Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, Maryland, Minnesota, and more. Wisconsin saw enough to bring him into its 2021 class as a 4-star TE. It felt like the start of something. But sometimes, the battles athletes fight aren’t the ones you see on film because behind the scenes, Jack Pugh was dealing with something far more personal.
What stood out in that 2021 statement showed how Jack Pugh had been searching for something better since his high school. And it showed once more in December 2023 when he made the decision to walk away from football. In a deeply honest Instagram post, he opened up about the struggles he had been carrying for years.
“My physical health was not near perfect,” he wrote, “but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up. Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness… In no way was football the root of these problems, but everything in my life had distracted me for so long to the point I didn’t want to be alive for years.”
Jack Pugh made it clear that football wasn’t the problem. If anything, it was one of the few places he found support. He thanked his coaches, his teammates, and the program. And now, two years later, the news of his passing sent shockwaves across the people he impacted along the way.
A life that meant more than the game
Jack Pugh wasn’t just an athlete trying to find his footing between two sports. He was someone searching for peace, for purpose, for happiness and brave enough to admit when he hadn’t found it yet. His teammates remember his energy.
“He had a way of making everyone feel included,” one of them shared. “Whether you were having a good game or a bad day, Jack was always there with encouragement.”
Even organizations from his Ohio basketball days, like Midwest Basketball Club – Puma, shared an emotional tribute.
“It’s with deep sadness that we inform the families, players and coaches of the tragic passing of Jack Pugh. As one of the first 9 players to ever wear the Mid Ohio Pumas uniform- we all know we have lost one of the best young men you will ever meet. He was Mr Puma, 😢RIP Jack.”
That’s legacy. Jack Pugh graduated from Wisconsin in 2025 with a degree in personal finance, a reminder that life after football was something he was actively building. His passing leaves a void in a community that saw him as more than a player. As tributes continue to pour in, he will be remembered for how deeply he connected.
