Now that the dust has settled on National Signing Day, it’s time to look ahead. But let’s rewind for a moment because one of the most intriguing storylines flew under the radar. A consensus 3-star QB, targeted by both Kirby Smart and Dan Lanning, made a stunning decision. He bypassed scholarship offers from powerhouse programs to walk on at LSU. Is that a loss for Georgia and Oregon? Don’t be fooled by the star rating or his status as a preferred walk-on.

There’s more to Emile Picarella’s story than meets the eye. In a new YouTube episode on After Further Review: LSU on February 8, Matt Moscona reasoned why LSU fans should be giving more attention to this under-the-radar pick. “We kind of looked at who was available and the top unsigned quarterback in the state of Louisiana was Emile Picarella,” the LSU alum began. “On Tuesday morning which we learned was Emile’s birthday… he committed to LSU as a preferred walk-on. Now I do want to be clear; this isn’t your common garden variety, hold-a-clipboard walk on.

Matt Moscona added, “He’s listed officially at 6’2, 210, good size, good prospect. At one point was a top 10 prospect in the class of 2025 and ultimately decided to pass on scholarship, some smaller scholarship offers to be a preferred walk-on for the Tigers.” Playing his first two seasons of high school football in Mississippi, Emile Picarella was a top 10 QB prospect in the class of 2025 early in the process. So it’s a no-brainer that he received offers from top programs in the country—among which are Oregon and Georgia.

But a shift in his rankings took place when he and his family transferred to Baton Rouge, where he became a two-year starter at University Laboratory School. And it was his 2023 performance that’s shining the light on Picarella as someone with elite talent. He threw for 2,312 yards and 34 touchdowns! Despite his fall in the rankings, LSU is no stranger to this No. 40 player in the state of Louisiana.

The Tigers have a front-row seat to his development and OC Joe Sloan saw enough to extend the walk-on opportunity. “I can’t wait to live out my dream. Thank you for the opportunity, Coach Sloan,” Picarella wrote on social media. But why did he fall way down in the rankings?

Can Emile Picarella make a comeback in LSU?

Matt Moscona took out his record book to hype the walk-on recruit. This past season, Emile Picarella fell short of expectations, and for no fault of his. It’s mainly because of a “clerical error” that ended their season prematurely with a postseason ban. He recorded just 685 yards and 11 touchdowns. But if he played a full season like any other QB, he would’ve emulated the success in his junior year in 2023 that displayed his capabilities as a signal caller. But LSU is positive about him.

We all know that the Tigers suffered a huge blow with the shocking Bryce Underwood flip to Michigan. So what leaves them in the QB room? Garret Nussmeier took the responsibility to return for one more season of college football under Brian Kelly. There’s also Colin Hurley and Mississippi State transfer Michael Van Buren in the QB room. And now, add Emile Picarella, who has the tools to push for reps down the line.

LSU fans have seen this story before. Sometimes, the unheralded guys end up making the biggest impact. Could Emile Picarella be the next great underdog story for the Tigers? Time will tell, but don’t count him out just yet!
