Four days ago, rumors linking former Jacksonville Jaguars HC Urban Meyer to Penn State started circulating on social media. The speculation began after American radio host Zach Gelb claimed on his show that Meyer’s move to PSU fell through due to a failed NIL deal. However, Meyer has now come out to shut down the rumors, revealing what actually happened.

Urban Meyer outwardly denied any truth to the rumors that indicate that he had lunch with Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick to discuss the head coach vacancy at PSU. Speaking on the 5th November episode of The Triple Option, Meyer revealed that during lunch, he talked politics to McCormick, not the PSU job.

“What’s the name? Zach Gelb, I believe, was his name. And you got to give him credit. And he has two sources that said that I met with the senator and became friends. Rob, you were there with Dave McCormack when we covered a Penn State game, and I stayed in touch with him, and we had breakfast in the Capitol, and we talked politics, Mark.” Meyer asserted.

For context, on the November 1 episode of his podcast, Zach Gelb claimed that Urban Meyer was interested in the Penn State job but was turned down due to his answers on how to handle NIL. Gelb said he had two sources that told him about the deal. This resulted in the rumors blowing up on social media.

Gelb had said on his show, “I’ve talked to two sources, and two sources told me that Urban Meyer had a great interest level in becoming the next head football coach at Penn State. And those sources told me he had conversations with the powers that be at Penn State about becoming their next head football coach.”

Gelb point out Meyer’s inexperience with NIL as the major obstacle. “The reason those talks broke down is that they got to the topic of NIL, which Urban Meyer has never been a head coach during the NIL era. His plan and his answers in terms of navigating those name, image, and likeness waters were not viewed as satisfactory enough. And that’s ultimately why Penn State is not going to view Urban Meyer as a fit for their program.”

The reaction from the fans prompted Urban Meyer to address the rumors. Reports also stated that he “bombed” his second interview with AD Pat Kraft and gave unsatisfactory answers to navigate NIL.

All these things forced Meyer to call out Gelb’s ‘sources’ on Triple Option, ending any truth to the rumors by saying, “The source says that I had conversations with Penn State about the NIL, and I didn’t know how to handle the NIL or something. That never happened.”

So, it looks like the rumors about Urban Meyer wanting to join PSU will finally die down. However, this isn’t the end of the speculation surrounding him. He finds himself caught up in another one. This time, however, the spotlight isn’t on him.

Urban Meyer has shot down one rumor, time for the next one?

Urban Meyer wasn’t the only target of Zach Gelb. After talking about Meyer’s failed PSU deal, Gelb added that the discussion between Meyer and McCormick went in a different direction. According to Gelb, Urban Meyer advocated for Ohio State’s OC Brian Hartline to get the PSU job instead.

“In further conversations with those sources, they went out of their way to tell me Urban Meyer is going to do whatever it takes to advocate for whatever job Brian Hartline wants. (Meyer) thinks Hartline is ready to be a coach, and he’s going to advocate on his behalf.” Gelb said on his show.
