Salt Lake City is holding its breath for another clash against the Texas Red Raiders, but more than that, they are mulling over whether it’s Kyle Whittingham’s last season. Well, much to the Utes’ speculation, Kyle’s close friend and analyst Urban Meyer fuels the truth behind it.

Earlier this week, analyst David Pollack believed that Kyle, who is in his 20th season at Salt Lake, would be his last. “Kyle Whittingham, I think it’s his last year,” Pollack had said on his show, See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack. However, Meyer’s vague reply has further prompted confusion about such a possibility.

“I talk to Kyle all the time, and how much he loves Utah. He is Utah Football,” Urban Meyer said to the press at Salt Lake ahead of the matchup with Texas Tech. Whittingham’s love for Utah will keep him going, but there’s more.

The press then prodded further. “Do you think he keeps going?” Meyer’s reply. “It’s…I’m not going there.” Well, that says something. Back in July, Whittingham himself had hinted at his retirement if Utah had won the Big 12 last campaign. “I couldn’t step away on that note,” Whittingham said in July. “It was too frustrating and too disappointing. Had we won the (conference) championship last year, I might not be sitting here.”

Back in the 2003-2004, Meyer steered the Utes, working alongside Kyle Whittingham. They went 10-2 in his first season, ending the conference title drought since 1957, and were selected for the College Football Hall of Fame back in January 2025. During his stint at Salt Lake, Kyle was the defensive coordinator, and the duo gelled well. “I don’t know if I’ve ever worked as well with a defense coordinator as I did with Kyle. He just handled his business. I ran the offense, he ran the defense. It was as good a two years as I’ve ever had,” Meyer said of the program that went No. 3 in the nation (points per game at 45.3) in 2004. It was the well-cherished undefeated season.

Over his career at Utah Utes, Kyle Whittingham boasts a 170-86 career record. In addition to that, he is tied for the second-longest tenured coach in the college football landscape. Well, 20 years is a lot of time, and undoubtedly, as Meyer reveals, Whittingham loves the Utes. Urban Meyer is back at the Rice-Eccles Stadium and has some advice for quarterback Davon Dampier.

Urban Meyer has one advice for Davon Dampier

Since the Fox’s pre-game began in 2019, “The Big Noon Kickoff, ” Urban Meyer tried his best to get the panel to Salt Lake City. After consistent efforts. “Go to Salt Lake. Go to Salt Lake,” he finally got his wish. On Saturday, FOX will make its BNK debut at the Rice-Eccles Stadium. Meanwhile, Meyer, who is a former Utah Utes head coach has some invaluable advice for Utes’ leader of the offense, quarterback Devon Dampier.

After nitpicking and analysing the Utes’ game film, he came to the conclusion that Dampier needs to improve at staying in the pocket. “He’s got to slide (in the pocket) to create (throwing) windows, and right now he’s bailing. He’s just running, and you’re putting yourself in harm’s way when you do that.” Over the last three weeks, Damper has had an explosive time. He recorded a 73% completion rate for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 33 rushing fr 198 yards with a touchdown and zero turnovers. A key explosive element in Whittingham’s playbook, he is improving on last season’s 5-7 record.

Is Kyle Whittingham's love for Utah enough to keep him coaching, or is retirement looming?

Raiders head coach Joey McGuire himself is in awe of how Dampier slices through the defensive wall. He compared him to NFL stars. “I remember in 2018, we faced Kyler Murray, and he’s a dynamic runner, and then we turned around and we had to play [Jalen] Hurts the next year, and he’s a dynamic runner, said McGuire, who had been on the Baylor Bears’ coaching staff in 2018. “I mean, [Dampier’s] like that whenever he pulls the ball down.”

Meyer further added that presently, there is a minor hiccup that might prove costly. The offense is not rolling in a smooth sync. “They got those two tackles, and the offensive line’s pretty good. Still, they’re not quite in sync on the outside.”

Tying it all together, Meyer is rooting for its former roster, provided they check off the three pointers. Good defense, control the line of scrimmage, and be careful about the turnovers. “If they take care of the ball, control the line of  scrimmage, and play defense, they’ll win.” Presently, in the 2025 season, the Utes are 3-0.
