Michigan fans were very eager for the start of the season, especially considering this was a game against the Fresno State team which they believed they would trounce. The Wolverines arrived at their playoff victory but the game raised more questions than answers mainly on the offense. It was not a day well-remember for Florida’s much-vaunted offensive line, an important component of the Michigan team.

The unit coordination lacked flow, and this was evident throughout the whole match. Head Coach Sherrone Moore addressed these concerns head-on. He didn’t sugarcoat the issues but also didn’t seem overly worried. A particularly evident aspect was the offense line and while admitting to this fact Moore quickly reiterated that “it takes time.” Such statements provided a certain level of comfort while at the same time making fans more optimistic that the team will “be better next week,”

But the elephant in the room was the overall performance of the offense. When asked how the talent could be developed, he stated that there were “ups and downs,” but quickly added that it is ideal and they will always attempt to be better.

He stated that the defense performed well and also there is much that they have to tidy up. We could see that Moore is interested in the larger picture, and not necessarily the outcome that would be posted within a short while.

Davis Warren steps up, but it’s just the beginning

The most hyped issue before the game was the one concerning Davis Warren as a quarterback. Moore said that Warren got it after he performed well in the final week of camp beating Alex Orji. When questioned, Moore said this of his choice: “He was consistent, took care of the ball and made plays.” Warren didn’t let the team down, being composed throughout the game. It was nice to see Davis Warren start his first game at the quarterback position but it can easily be seen that they have a long way to go.Warren himself was content with the performance saying, “I felt proud of the way I performed in camp… I knew this team needs to rely on me and be a guy they can count on.” This was coupled with sensible words about the need to win. While Warren held the starting role, Alex Orji still saw some action on the field. This rotation hardly raised the eyebrows of Warren, a team player per excellence. Without any qualm he said, “I got no issue doing that.”  and added, “Alex had a ton of good plays – it doesn’t affect me.”  Warren’s focus on the bigger picture rather than individual stats speaks to his leadership qualities.

As a matter of defense, Josaiah Stewart made the team’s position very clear from the onset. “We played hard and physical. We came out there and set the tone,” he said. The defense struggled to contain Fresno State and the same could also be said about the offense though there is always room for improvement. This type of aggression improves the team’s mentality as it heads into the next games.
