Old Dominion vs. Virginia Tech is set for fireworks under the lights at Lane Stadium. Conversely, the Hokies (0-2) are still searching for their first win after a 44-20 loss to Vanderbilt, where QB Kyron Drones showed flashes with a pair of scores. As per the prediction, Virginia Tech will beat Old Dominion 25-20. The Hokies are favored on the moneyline at -221, though they’ve never faced odds this short this season. Meanwhile, Old Dominion has been solid against the spread, going 2-0 and unbeaten as a 5.5-point underdog or more. However, with the over/under at 51.5, slightly above both teams’ combined scoring average, expect a tightly contested, low-scoring affair where every possession will matter. And with the ACC Network crew on call, the game promises even more excitement.

Virginia Tech’s mindset before Week 3 action

After back-to-back second-half meltdowns, Virginia Tech may want to save “Enter Sandman” for halftime. Now, outscored 34-0 in the second half of their second game and struggling to score in the second half of their first, the Hokies know a full 60-minute effort is needed against Old Dominion (1-1) this Saturday. Here, HC Brent Pry admitted, “I didn’t question effort. I did question if the guys were tired.” However, Old Dominion brings a challenge of its own.

Can Virginia Tech avoid a historic 0-3 start, or will Old Dominion spoil their season?

Have an interesting take?

Quarterback Colton Joseph has tormented defenses this season, throwing three TDs against North Carolina Central. And that’s not all. He scored 179 yards and two scores in a close loss to Indiana. “He’s a competitor. He’s a quality runner,” said Pry. So, the Monarchs will test the Hokies at every level. But Virginia Tech will counter with dual-threat QB Kyron Drones, who threw for a TD and ran for another versus Vanderbilt. But with a 0-2 start, Pry knows the stakes are high.

The Hokies haven’t opened a season 0-3 since 1987. Given that, Old Dominion HC Ricky Rahne said of the Hokies: “It’s more about their talent. You just don’t want to lose. It doesn’t matter what your record is.” Virginia Tech must avoid a second-half slumber if it hopes to keep the Hokies’ season alive.
