In all major sports, there is always the question of “Who’s on your Mount Rushmore?“. The question might feature players or coaches, past or present, or sometimes all of the mentioned before. Well, this brings us to a similar question, Who’s on the Mount Rushmore of Ohio State Buckeyes? Yeah, it’s a question that can start a never-ending debate, just because of the sheer number of different opinions.

Back in 2009, Adam Rittenberg, the Big Ten football blogger for ESPN, decided to make a list of four people from each program that more or less defined the team. So, he also made a list of Ohio State’s four people who made it to his Mount Rushmore list. Drumrolls! First, Rittenberg named Woody Hayes, the coaching icon who will forever be the face of the Buckeyes. Hayes won it all! Five national championships, and 13 Big Ten titles in his illustrious twenty-eight-year tenure.

Next up on the list was Archie Griffin, well he’s the only college football player to win the Heisman Trophy twice and also an all-time great! Chris Spielman took the third spot, even though we might argue that he’s the greatest defensive player for the Buckeyes. However, no one can deny he’s pretty close, if not in the first position. Lastly, Rittenberg named Chic Harley, who led the reigns of the program in the 1910s, establishing their dominance.

That is Adam Rittinberg’s take. Do you agree with his top four? Well, it’s almost correct. However, several people have since jumped in giving their exclusive take on the matter. Although there are no wrong answers, it makes to wonder how different people view things differently. A suggestion from Bleacher Report’s Ryan Staab was to include Howard “Hopalong” Cassady on the list. Furthermore, this debate also led us to a question that might soon become a reality. Let’s hear it out!

Will Jeremiah Smith soon dethrone Archie Griffin from Ohio State’s Mount Rushmore?

In just his first season of college football, Jeremiah Smith is making the world take notice of his skills! Smith has registered 71 catches for a stellar 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. If that wasn’t enough, out of those 71 catches, 27 have gone for 15+ years whereas 14 have gone for 25+ yards! That just goes to show how impressive the freshman has been.

Andre Johnson and all of those guys made an impression, But not like Jeremiah. From the day that he walked on campus last January, he was the best they had,” said Larry Blustein a legendary reporter of Prep Redzone. That’s some big word coming from Blustein. So, we arrive at the question, is Jeremiah Smith already on the way to Ohio State’s Mt. Rushmore? Former Ohio State star Cardale Jones had something to add to this conversation.

Jones is one of Columbus’ own, and his words hold a lot of weight in the city. He thinks Smith will eventually be an all-time no-brainer, but he cannot put him on the Mt. Rushmore of Ohio State. “It’s tough when you say all-time greats of Ohio State history because you have to go back to some guys like Cris Carter, Terry Glenn, David Boston, Ted Ginn Jr., and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes,” said the former Buckeyes star on “Until Saturday” podcast.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Jeremiah Smith really dethrone Archie Griffin on Ohio State's Mount Rushmore of football legends?

While Jones said Jeremiah Smith isn’t yet coronation-ready, it won’t be long before everyone will have to accept that he’s up there with Ohio’s very best! “Jeremiah Smith is going to be one of the best receivers in college football history, not just Ohio State history, when his three years are up before he’s draft eligible,” Jones said. With that being said, it’s clear that the experts think that when Jeremiah is set and done with college football, he’ll be on the Ohio State Mt. Rushmore. Not only that! They think he’ll be one of the best college football players ever. Suggesting it’s not a question of how but of when Smith will do it.
