Upon his appointment in 2022, as mentioned above, he was compensated with a base salary of $975,000. His salary was further raised to $1.014 million in 2023. He then received a 26% raise to reach a base salary of $1.3 million in his new contract extension in 2024, along with previously mentioned deferred compensation and bonuses. Dr. Ono’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in biological science from the University of Chicago in 1984. And from McGill University in Canada, he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in experimental medicine in 1991. 

Then his professional career began with a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. His research at Harvard has led to distinctive findings in gene regulation within the immune system. And its implication for diseases like age-related macular degeneration and diabetes. In 2006, Ono joined Emory University for Undergraduate Education and Academic Affairs as vice provost.
