Jim Harbaugh, the former Michigan Wolverines coach was scheduled to be the honorary captain for Michigan’s first game of the year against Fresno State. People were thrilled as Harbaugh returned to the place he used to coach, with the Maize and Blue team. However, in what has become an unpredictable twist, Harbaugh will not even attend the game anymore.

Rather, he has concentrated on his new position in the Los Angeles Chargers, where he will be starting his initial season as a head coach on the 8th of September against the Las Vegas Raiders. Harbaugh decided to skip the game, following a call with Wolverines’ head coach, Sherrone Moore. To the media, his main priority is to prepare for his first season with the Chargers, and he did not wish to distract the Michigan team. However, Harbaugh himself won’t be present, though his parents Jack and Jackie Harbaugh will attend on his behalf.

The connection between the Harbaugh family and Michigan is still solid even though Jim will not be on the sideline. This decision comes on the heels of the NCAA’s announcement of a four-year show-cause order for Harbaugh for the violation of the recruiting rules during COVID-19.

The sanctions were a result of impermissible means of communication with the recruits which also saw Michigan athletic director, Warde Manuel acknowledge that Harbaugh had indeed taken the post of the honorary captain for the team. But with these recent NCAA rulings, and with his new job in Los Angeles, Harbaugh has chosen to focus on his present rather than revisiting his past with Michigan. But Harbaugh ain’t the only one to attract the attention of the NCAA committee!

NCAA scrutiny extends beyond Jim Harbaugh

However, the current head coach of Michigan Sherrone Moore is also not having it easy as he is also struggling with his problems apart from having to cope with Harbaugh’s loss. In an unrelated case, Moore is an NCAA’s target for investigation on a sign-stealing scheme that accused Michigan staff member Connor Stalions. Moore is said to have deleted 52 text messages in which he was conversing with Stalions and the messages had to be retrieved by the NCAA enforcement staff. This investigation continues up to the present time, making another issue for Moore to solve as he is set to take charge as the head coach of the Wolverines this season.

The nature of Moore’s Involvement in the Sign-Stealing Case is a Level II violation and these are not as heinous as Level I violations, but they are severe. However, it could paint Moore as a repeat violator because of his prior involvement in another recruiting violations case that resulted in Harbaugh’s current show-cause order. In an attempt to make peace, Moore was banned in a game against Michigan early in the 2023 season calendar, which fueled the current investigations. Of course, there have been many controversies off the field with Moore, but he knows that his job is to get the Wolverines a champion team.

The situation of the Michigan Wolverines at the beginning of this season is quite promising. They are flying high but burdened with horrific offenses of the NCAA. Harbaugh’s choice to pass over a nostalgic return to Michigan is a signal that the Wolverines must carve out their own identity this season. While the Wolverines get ready for their clash against Fresno State, they will have no chance to see their former coach on the sideline but have fans behind them.
