Shane Beamer did not take Saturday’s 10-20 loss to LSU lightly. South Carolina was outplayed on all fronts after the second quarter of the game. The OL coach, Lonnie Teasley, was fired, ending his three-year tenure in Columbia. But the firing could come back to bite Shane Beamer after a four-star Carolina commit shed doubt on joining them after news broke about Lonnie Teasley.

Losing out on the four-star IOL Zyon Guiles because of Teasley’s firing would hand Shane Beamer two losses this week. Zyon committed to South Carolina back in March. He is a part of South Carolina’s 2026 class, along with five-star IOL Darius Gray. Both of them are highly sought-after prospects. However, recent developments have raised questions about how Lonnie Teasley’s firing might impact the duo’s decisions.

Darius Gray was saddened to hear about the firing, but he was still confident in joining South Carolina. “It’s a tough situation, and I loved Teasley. I’m not too sure what the plan is, but Columbia is where I want to be, and I feel that this is all a part of God’s plan.” Gray said. While Gray gave his word of being a South Carolina commit, Zyon Guiles didn’t seem that assured of his decision anymore.

“Opened up my options a little bit, but as of right now I’m still 100-percent locked, have to sit with my family soon and talk with God,” Zyon Guiles expressed. It could very well be the fact that Zyon wanted to play under an experienced OL coach like Lonnie Teasley. Now that he’s gone, Teasley may look to join another program where he can grow under more experienced offensive line coaches.

Although he did say he was ‘100% locked in’ with South Carolina, it wouldn’t be surprising if other schools have already caught his attention. If he chooses another program, then South Carolina would miss out on one of the best young talents in college football right now. Whether they will be able to retain him at the William-Brice after Lonnie Teasley is unclear at the moment.

Why did Shane Beamer fire Lonnie Teasley?

The offensive line has been an issue for South Carolina this season. They have been struggling in pass protection, already allowing eight sacks early into the season. There has been a recurring issue with the O-line not being able to clear up running lanes or control the pressure from opponents. So naturally, the fingers pointed at Lonnie Teasley.

Against LSU, the O-line played a very inconsistent game. While it did open some gaps for the run game, it could not provide space for LaNorris Sellers, who was under a lot of pressure. Out of the thirteen fouls committed, five were charged to the O-line, which also includes the two illegal snap penalties.

Shawn Elliot was appointed as the interim OL coach. But whether the move pays off for Shane Beamer’s side remains to be seen. South Carolina is 1-3 against SEC opponents and has a 3-3 overall record. A win would have boosted Carolina’s confidence going forward. But now, with an interim OL coach, they will face the Oklahoma Sooners next week.
