It has been three days since Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA, restoring his eligibility, but the Texas Tech QB is still getting continuous hits following the court ruling. Many have expressed their displeasure with the decision, and now the junior U.S. Senator from Texas, Ted Cruz, has also finally spoken out on the Sorby ruling.

“The judicial decision was mind-blowing. It’s hard to find something that illustrates more powerfully how broken the system is,” said Cruz, as reported by Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger on June 10 at the college athletics roundtable.

The concern isn’t Sorsby getting an opportunity to play this season with the Red Raiders, but the concern is the NCAA failing to enforce its own strict sports-wager rule on the QB despite his admission of placing over 9,000 impermissible bets since 2022. If a state court can erase the organization’s permanent ineligibility ruling for betting on a player’s own team, the question arises: Is there any control of the NCAA over the sport?

In 2022, when Sorsby was a redshirt freshman at Indiana, he placed nearly 40 bets on his Hoosiers, claiming it was “compulsion” rather than a motive “to earn money.” After the NCAA’s investigations and findings, they declared him permanently ineligible, but Sorsby’s legal team filed a lawsuit in Lubbock County court and argued the organization weaponized Brendan Sorby’s gambling scandal instead of treating it as a medical issue and breached its obligations to protect student-athletes’ well-being.

On June 8, Judge Ken Curry granted an injunction with a self-proposed two-game suspension, ruling the Raiders QB would suffer “probable, imminent, and irreparable injury” without the court’s intervention. However, CFB big names and media personalities viewed that ruling as the best example to show why the Cruz-Cantwell bill needs to become a law.

“I see why others (and include me here), it’s ludicrous to think that every time any player’s eligibility is in question, a judge in your town with an injunction can restore eligibility,” wrote Fox Sports’ Tim Brando. “That’s why, despite what the @SEC & @B1Gfootball say now, we need these leaders to repair in some form, the Bill that @SenTedCruz & @SenatorCantwell have authored and pass it into law.”

While the Protect College Sports Act is designed to address players’ eligibility, transfers, and NIL, Cruz stated that the Sorsby decision wouldn’t have happened under this bill. “We explicitly protect the ability to guard eligibility and for gambling. The idea you have players gambling on their sports and a hometown judge says they get to play—that’s messed up,” said Cruz, as reported by Ross Dellenger.

Even ESPN’s Chris Fowler worried about college football’s future after Sorsby’s ruling. According to him, a central leader or college commissioner is needed to solve this chaotic landscape. However, Texas Tech’s AD isn’t ready to take more criticism of the Red Raiders’ QB.

Texas Tech AD shuts down all critiques targeted at Brendan Sorsby

Brendan Sorsby’s court ruling sparked outrage, considering his gambling scandal. But Texas Tech showed support to its QB from the start. Even now, when the QB is facing immense heat, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt jumped in to protect Sorsby, arguing that the circumstances of the case did not justify permanent ineligibility.

“Texas Tech is not a party to Brendan’s lawsuit. We did not file it. We did not fund it,” said Hocutt, releasing a defiant official statement. “A young man in treatment for a clinically diagnosed addiction exercised his legal right to seek a remedy in court, and a judge agreed with him. Our role has been to support his recovery, not to engineer his eligibility.”

“I’ve heard the word “integrity” used a great deal in the last 48 hours. As someone who has dedicated his career to college sports, I, too, believe integrity is central to our industry’s success. I also think integrity applies on more than one front. The integrity of sport matters. So does the integrity of how we treat a 22-year-old who sought help, entered residential treatment, and is working every day toward recovery. Those two things don’t have to be in conflict.”

The Red Raiders AD assured the program supports Brendan Sorsby’s return to play for the 2026 season at fullest despite outside noise. While the NCAA has already appealed the decision, it remains unknown what is going to come out of it. Sorsby has a temporary injunction, and there is still a long road ahead. The NCAA is not going to give up on the battle and is likely to push till the final order is made by the court.
