The Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t having the exact season they expected. But, no surprises, senior forward Luka Garza is getting buckets. He led the Hawkeyes to an important win over the Michigan State Spartans last night. During the game, he also reached a huge milestone.

Early into the second half, Garza got an open look at the perimeter. After taking a second to get into position, he took the three-pointer. It was all net, and with that shot, he reached the 2000 points mark for the Hawkeyes. He knew it was going in, as he started walking away midway.

Garza finished the game with 27 points, and that took his overall tally to 2009 points. He is only second to Roy Marble, who had 2116 points, and was the only player with over 2000 points for the Hawkeyes previously. So Garza needs just 108 points more in the remaining nine games to surpass his tally. He can easily do it, and it won’t be surprising if he does in the next four games.

Can Luka Garza help the Iowa Hawkeyes to finish strongly?

The Hawkeyes were expected to finish as one of the top three teams in the country. But after four losses, they are currently just eighth in the AP Poll. They lost to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, but that wasn’t surprising. However, their losses to Minnesota, Indiana, and Illinois were unexpected.

They have started this week well, with a win against the Spartans, and will aim to do the same against the Ohio State Buckeyes tomorrow. They finish their week with a game against Indiana where they’ll be eager for revenge.

The Hawkeyes need the team to support Garza, who has been their sole consistent player. He is averaging 26.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this season, while shooting an astonishing 59% from the field and 45% from three. He is bossing opposition defenses in the paint and on the perimeter, which is why he is the favorite for the National Player of the Year.

The rest of their games are winnable, and if they play at their best, they can finish with no losses in these last nine games. It will help them to improve their record massively as they aim to win the Big 10 regular-season title for the first time since 1979.
