No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem has advanced to his first US Open final. Thiem defeated arch-rival Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to reach his fourth Grand Slam final.

Medvedev entered the showdown without dropping a set en route to the seminal stage. However, Thiem’s impeccable defense proved too strong for the Russian. Despite being 0-3 down in the third set, Thiem made an extraordinary comeback to force the third set into a tiebreaker.

During the post-match interview, Thiem talked about how he hoped to win his maiden Grand Slam title. The Austrian has lost all the three Grand Slam finals he has featured in: the 2020 Australian Open Final to Novak Djokovic, and the 2018 and 2019 Roland Garros Final to Rafael Nadal.

“If I win, I have my first [Grand Slam title]. If not, I have to slowly call Andy Murray to find out how it is with 0-4,” said Thiem after a 6-2, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) victory of Medvedev.

Thiem joked about having to call Andy Murray to know what to do after losing the first four Grand Slam finals if he loses the final on Sunday. However, if the No. 2 seed lifts the trophy at Flushing Meadows, he will become the first Austrian to win a US Open title.

“I’m desperate to win this first big title. Him as well, he tries to win it in his first try. Me it’s going to be the fourth one,” remarked Thiem on playing the US Open 2020 final against Zverev.

Dominic bettered his head-to-head record against Medvedev and now leads 3-1. It will be the first time since the 2014 US Open that no player from the Big 3 has reached the US Open final.

Alexander Zverev played the most remarkable match by defeating Pablo Busta despite losing the opening two sets. After committing 36 unforced errors in the first two sets, Zverev fought back to win an epic semifinal. Zverev has reached his first Grand Slam final and will face Dominic Thiem, who will be playing his fourth.

The duo has played nine times over the course of their careers, with Thiem leading 7-2.
