It ain't broke, so don't fix it — 54% of 456 fans back Hocevar's celebration

NASCAR Should Decide on a Case-by-Case Basis

**TLDR** — The verdict is in, and NASCAR Nation wants the show to go on. A commanding 54% of 456 voters say Carson Hocevar's post-race antics are exactly what hooks fans, while just 25% raised the safety flag and 21% argued for a case-by-case approach. Supporters insist the sport needs characters again, with one reader bluntly stating, 'It ain't broke, so don't fix it,' and another arguing NASCAR's rulebook obsession is 'ruining the sport.' Even skeptics admitted the stunt was 'a great show,' though several warned a single slip near the wall could turn celebration into catastrophe — 'eventually someone will do something that will cause serious injury.' Nostalgic fans pointed to Alan Kulwicki's Polish Victory Lap as proof that one-off flair builds legends. The message to NASCAR brass is loud: let the drivers breathe, let the moments matter, and stop sanitizing the sport fans fell for in the first place.

We asked readers to weigh in — 21 shared their take. Here’s what they said:

If he lost control of his car while close to the wall he could have been hurt very badly or even killed. A regular burnout or a reverse lap around the track would be just fine.

What if he had fallen out just before getting close to the wall when he started that stunt?

Even with further wins this may be a one-time celebration display for Hocevar. Alan Kulwicki said his "Polish Victory Lap" celebrated his first win and was a one-time thing until he did so again with his championship. Regardless, Hocevar's celebration was a breath of fresh air over smoky burnouts. (Pun not initially intended, but run with it.)

It's always been case-by-case basis. Re: Kyle Larsons son riding on the outside of his racecar. It was wild and made me nervous but turned out OK in the end. Fans love it.

It was Carsons 1st win ever that's a special occasion. I don't think that type of celebration should be every week.

Nascar needs characters. Like they had in the 60's to 80's, then it appeared that Nascar zipped the drivers character and opinions to protect I guess the fragile public from reality.

Some one should remind Steven A. that a Nascar driver was Athletic Man of the Year by The Associate Press. The drive was Jimmy Johnson, 2009.

Nascar lives on drivers with personality and talent. Hocevar has both. The corporate suits need to realize that and run with it.
