The verdict is in, and it is overwhelming: 60% of Essentially Golf readers voted Rule 5.6b—Pace of Play as the rule most desperately needing modification, dwarfing the 27% backing reform of amateur prize money restrictions and the 13% wanting changes to the 14-club limit. The frustration in the comments is palpable. One reader fumed that pros "take longer to play 70 shots than us hackers take to play 90," while another proposed a hard 45-second shot clock with a two-stroke penalty for violators. A third pointed to AimPoint, caddie consultations, and excessive green reading as the culprits choking the modern game, warning that the glacial tempo "is killing Golf's TV appeal." The consensus is clear—fans want enforcement, not more rules. From weekend public-course walkers to lifelong league players, the message to the USGA and R&A is unanimous: grip it, rip it, and get on with it.

Why have amateurs and pros if they both get paid

The pace of play has become so excruciating that it makes soccer appear interesting. For many years, I would be the first out at my home course (public), and usually join one or two other golfers. We walked, with pull carts, and it seldom took three hours to play. The pace of play is killing Golf's TV appeal.

THEY ARE AMATEURS!!!!!! Enough said. If one is eighteen years old and is invited to play in the Masters but turns the offer down because he wouldnt receive any money, he should maybe stay home with mommy and daddy and play miniature golf.

The number of clubs should be limited to 10. This would reduce the cost of starting to play golf. It would also encourage walking with a lighter bag. On the pro level it would save the backs of caddies and force more shot making, not so many "stock shots".

Slow players should be penalized and immediately. It ruins the game. Hit it and get on with it. Too much aim point. Too much talking to caddies. Too much back and forth walking. Too much not being ready to play when its your turn. Grip it and rip it.

The pace of play is too slow. I would propose that once a player's ball has been located, they have 45 seconds to hit the ball. IF they go beyond 45 seconds, it is a 2 stroke penalty.

In my men's golf league with mostly senior men we have to finish 18 in 4 hrs 15 minutes or the whole group gets penalized. Let the pros use range finders to speed up the game.

There a beauty in playing for the game. I believe that is being lost now in football, basketball, etc in high school sports. I have played sports all the way thru college and am still playing some of them still in my seventies and the reason I play is I love golf and tennis and all the friends I have made.

Over examination generally creates more confusion and doesn't improve scoring. One can assess all one needs to know in just a few seconds with a sound pre-shot routine. How often do touring professionals waste all sorts of time calculating distance and wind and use bizarre green reading techniques and still hit the wrong club and mis-read putts?

Get to your ball and be ready with distance and club to hit when your turn. Be chatty Cathy’s on the tee and green but not gathered around each fairway player. Add your score off the green and be courteous, please!

The issue has become worse with Aim Point and determining break with your feet. What's next and how much time will Pro takes to hit an 8 foot putt.

The rule reflects a period of time when golf was played, and ruled, by the rich. Pros were considered 2nd class citizens. Pros have overcome that stigma, but the rest remains. It needs to be examined.

Amateurs should get enough money to cover expenses, to include travel, room and meals, caddie costs, especially if they make the cut in a pro tournament.

I believe Amateurs should be allowed to earn 25% of what the prize money is for whatever position they finish in any PGA scantion tournament on any tour they play including all agreements with other World Golfing Association. The Amateurs should be given an expense reimbursement for all cost to play in a tournament they are invited to play or qualify for. This should never affect their Amateur status. The cost associated to play at the PGA level should never be used as a way to keep any talent Amateur golfer anyplace in the world from playing in any event they earned to play in. We just keep paying the elite golfers around the world more money at the expense of the greater expansion of golf around the world being held back by greed of the different golf regulations bodies using just the World Rankings etc to keep the status quo. I have been a golfer my whole life beginning from age 3 to Age 72 now and truly these last 5 to 7 years I have just lost my love of watching the game on TV. I did watch the US Open 2026 on TV Saturday for 4 hours and missed Sunday coverage unfortunately. I believe we have allowed the respect and honour of the game from the players and fans get way out of balance and the enjoyment of following the game has suffered greatly. Lets hope Whydam Clark's story has the longevity of being a remarkable turn in his life and he is an example to the youth today that comes close to the truly great golfer's of the past. Tiger Woods was an outstanding talent with great success personally however he can't hold a candle to Snead, Jones, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson, Langar, Jacklin, Ballesteros, Littler, Player, Irvin and others who understood sportsmanship and brotherhood after the game. The equipment that players play with today certainly has taken the game to a different level of success. Keeping your head down still helps to hit the ball. Fore!!!!

Either prize money or a reasonable amount for allowance to help defray the amateur's expenses for the tournament. Hole-in-One prizes would also be a big boost. Times have changed over the last century in golf, and this "tradition of no prize money to amateurs" needs to be reviewed to encourage amateurs to compete without thinking of their financial obligation and capacity.

How about timing players like in Chess? Cutting edge tech could allow spotters to time each individual player and they could distribute their alloted time over the entire round. Too radical? While we're discussing rules, can someone tell me why divots can't be considered like "ground under repair"? Move the ball within a specified distanance behind the divot and play on.
