According to reports, the Chiefs signed Woods in a four-year, $17.3 million deal, including a $9.04 million signing bonus. Not just that, the former Clemson standout will also earn $3.1 million in his rookie season. However, after tax deduction, the annual amount is set to be around $2.4 million. Historically, there have been several examples where NFL players have struggled to manage their earnings. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, almost 78% of the NFL stars were either bankrupt or financially stressed shortly after their retirement. These reasons probably resulted in fans raising concerns about Woods’ purchase.
However, Woods had a fair reason behind buying those cars for his family members, and it is heart-touching.
“They’ve been two women in this process who have really reached out and checked on me,” Woods told Palmetto Sports. “But forget the process. That’s my mom and my sister, you know what I’m saying? They’ve really been there for me when the door was closed, and the lights were off, and people didn’t really know what was going on. But they knew. “Sometimes I don’t always vocalize that. Sometimes I’m busy, so I really felt like it was important to go big and make it hit home for them because they certainly deserve it.”
While there is no doubt that Woods made those purchases from a good place in his heart, fans online did not seem to agree with his choice of spending right after getting picked in the draft.
Fans’ reaction to Chiefs’ Peter Woods spending
Spending big on draft day meant that Woods would face a lot of criticism and shared opinions from fans about finances.
One fan wrote: “Get this guy a financial advisor ASAP…should honestly come as part of a package when drafted.” Meanwhile, another netizen noted the cars as a depreciating asset. “Yeah, let’s purchase an overpriced, rapidly depreciating asset. That’s how you build generational wealth.”
The majority of the comments seemingly pointed out poor decision-making skills. As a result, many felt the 21-year-old would struggle to maintain a positive financial book in the coming years. “He’ll be broke w/in a year of exiting pro ball. Zero financial skill right there,” a user commented.
Similar to that, another fan wrote: “And that’s why he will be penniless by 30.” Amid that, a few also shared suggestions on where Woods could have invested his money. “At least buy something as an investment. That could’ve been a down payment on houses,” the netizen commented.
Lastly, a portion of the fans also took notice of the publicity around the activity. “People have to realize, good deeds get done every day with no publicity,” a fan wrote.
Although Woods may have intended it as a gesture to please his family, it ultimately backfired. However, the 21-year-old will look to focus on shutting out any distractions as he prepares for his rookie NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
