Before selecting Arvell Reese at No. 5, New York Giants‘ head coach John Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen both emphasised how much they value their 2022 5th overall pick, Kayvon Thibodeaux. With that, Harbaugh also added that ‘everybody’s tradable’ when pressed on the ongoing trade chatter around Thibodeaux. Later, NFL insider Ari Meirov gave some insight into the current situation.

#Giants DE Kayvon Thibodeaux is now expected to be a top trade candidate,” Ari Meirov noted on X.

These speculations surfaced in the first place because even with a crowded defensive front that already features Brian Burns, 2025 first-round pick Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants felt Arvell Reese was too good to pass up.

Unlike Meirov, though, ESPN insider Adam Schefter sees things differently. He reported that a source indicates the Giants do not intend to trade Thibodeaux immediately.

What does Arvell Reese’s selection mean for the Giants’ defense?

John Harbaugh kicked off his New York Giants draft run by picking Arvell Reese, and the choice says a lot about what he wants on defense. The Ohio State linebacker brings rare athletic traits at 6-4 and 241 pounds, and he moves like a much smaller player after clocking a 4.46 in the 40. He also lined up in multiple roles under Matt Patricia, which adds to his appeal.

Moreover, that versatility looks like a big part of the plan in New York. Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson want to move him around and keep offenses guessing. Reese himself confirmed that vision right after the pick, saying, “The Giants told me they’re going to get unique with me, use me in a bunch of unique ways. I’m looking forward to that.” That kind of usage could make him a key chess piece at MetLife Stadium for Big Blue.

At the same time, Reese enters a crowded but talented room. He is one of the youngest top-five picks in recent history, and he now joins a group that already includes Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Tremaine Edmunds. For Big Blue fans, that mix brings both excitement and questions about how the snaps will be shared.

Still, Reese earned this moment with his rise at Ohio State. After starting out on special teams and sitting behind veterans, he broke through during his junior year. He played 14 games, recorded 6.5 sacks, and added 10 tackles for loss while anchoring one of the best defenses in college football.

So, the next step becomes clear for the Giants. While Reese has the tools to impact games right away, the team must decide where he fits best. That decision could shape how Harbaugh’s first pick defines this new era.
