The 2026 NFL season is just weeks away, and one of the players on the Buffalo Bills roster has been struck by a tragic loss. The franchise’s defensive tackle Ed Oliver is mourning the demise of his two-year-old son. In this tough time for Oliver and his family, the Bills GM Brandon Beane came forward, representing the franchise, to offer support to their player.

“On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son,” Beane wrote in a statement. “It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
According to the reports, Ed Oliver’s two-year-old son passed away from an accidental drowning on June 28, 2026. The incident took place at Oliver’s family home in Huffman, Texas (a northeast suburb of Houston) around the evening hours.
At around 6:15 p.m. that day, Harris County Sheriff’s deputies and first responders rushed to the residence, where the toddler was found unresponsive after falling into a swimming pool.
“The toddler was believed to be 2 years old, Detective Dustin Davis said in a briefing filmed by OnScene TV,” a report from the Houston Chronicle said. “The drowning occurred on the 500 block of Lago Trace Drive, and sheriff’s deputies responded at about 6:15 p.m., he said. The child was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
Oliver and his family kept the tragedy strictly private for nearly two months while they grieved before the news became public through NFL reporters. And per reports, the Buffalo Bills DT has requested “privacy and prayers at this very difficult time.
Ed Oliver has been part of the Bills setup since 2019 when the franchise drafted him as a first-round pick. Over the years, he has consistently played a crucial role in the franchise’s success, recording 243 tackles and 30 sacks in 95 regular-season games.
However, his run during the 2025 season was cut short due to a season-ending injury. When the Buffalo Bills came out to face the Carolina Panthers in a Week 8 matchup, tore his left biceps tendon. Even though Oliver underwent surgery, he was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Heading into the 2026 season, Ed Oliver attended the training camp sessions. He will look to put his best foot forward this season and dedicate all his wins to his son, who passed away tragically.
