The San Francisco 49ers head into Thursday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams, with a 3-1 record, matching their division rivals. It’s a big early-season matchup, and the 49ers aren’t hiding anything, especially when it comes to their injury report.

After a shortened week of practice, San Francisco confirmed several key absences, including quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy missed Weeks 2 and 3 with a toe injury and returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But his performance was shaky. He threw one interception, lost a fumble, and accounted for two of the team’s four turnovers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy was sore after the game and wasn’t sure if he’d be ready on a short week.

On Monday, Shanahan called Purdy “truly questionable,” and the 25-year-old QB himself admitted he wouldn’t have been ready if the game had been played Tuesday night. By Wednesday, the team officially ruled him out for Thursday’s game, handing the starting job to Mac Jones.

Jones has already proven he can run Shanahan’s offense. In Week 2 against the Saints, he threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns. In Week 3 against the Cardinals, he went 20-of-21 with a touchdown. His steady play gives the 49ers a reliable option while Purdy recovers.

More injuries hit the offense

The 49ers will be without several key players heading into Thursday Night Football against the Rams. Wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ribs) have both been ruled out, thinning the team’s depth at the position.

Defensive end Robert Beal Jr. (ankle) and wide receiver Jordan Watkins (calf) are also out. Neither participated in any of the team’s walkthroughs this week.

Safety C.J. West is listed as questionable with a thumb injury. He was limited in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, giving him a chance to suit up.

With multiple starters sidelined, head coach Kyle Shanahan will rely heavily on the run game and quarterback Mac Jones to keep the offense steady and avoid turnovers.

But San Francisco isn’t the only team dealing with setbacks. The Rams have injury concerns of their own, and they directly impact the quarterback.

Matthew Stafford receives an alarming notification

The Rams come into the game with some bad news of their own. Right tackle Rob Havenstein and tight end Tyler Higbee are both listed as doubtful, putting the quarterback Matthew Stafford’s protection and passing options in jeopardy.

Higbee, one of Stafford’s most reliable targets throughout his career, is dealing with a hip issue and has been largely ineffective this season.

Higbee’s 2025 campaign has been a mixed bag, with only six receptions for 62 yards over four games. His high watermark came in Week 2 against the Titans, when he caught four passes for 37 yards. A lingering hip injury kept him from contributing much against the Eagles and Colts.

With the 32-year-old most likely not suiting up on Thursday, tight end Terrance Ferguson will be asked to take his place. Ferguson has played in only two games and logged just four offensive snaps this season, but this could be his first real chance to make an impact in the Rams’ offense.

Right tackle Rob Havenstein has been nursing an ankle injury and is also questionable for Thursday night’s game. Havenstein has been a steady presence on the line for several seasons, but injury may finally sideline him. If he is unable to go, Warren McClendon is expected to fill in at tackle.

Thursday’s game is shaping up to be a battle of attrition, with both franchises facing major challenges. The 49ers have officially ruled out Purdy, turning to Mac Jones to lead the offense, while the Rams remain in limbo with two of their offensive pillars uncertain.
