On October 2, Mac Jones entered the SoFi Stadium wearing a black and red “two-face” suit. The poker face was enough to tell everyone that he meant business, and once the game started, he proved it, as the 49ers played without their starter, Brock Purdy, again.

Jones led the way with 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards as the 49ers beat the Rams 26-23. He also threw 2 TDs, a 6-yarder to Jake Tonges and a 1-yard pass to Christian McCaffrey, making sure that his team didn’t miss Purdy, who had to sit out two games before coming back in Week 4, only to be sidelined again.

The 49ers starter injured his shoulder and toe in the season opener. When he came back, he again experienced soreness and was put back on the bench. But the backup Mac Jones has taken things in his stride, racking up wins in all three games he has started so far and throwing for more than 250 yards in each of them.

Jones is making a strong case for a long-term deal. And the fact that the Niners HC Kyle Shanahan wanted to draft him back in 2021 only helps his bid.

What makes Jones’ surge even more special is that the 49ers are dealing with injuries to their wide receivers, too. Jauan Jennings has played 3 games this year and has 9 receptions for 129 yards with 1 touchdown. WR Ricky Pearsall has been their pick of the WR group with 20 receptions for 327 yards. But Mac Jones was playing without both of them.

He still bamboozled the Rams. And fans were more than happy as they started a campaign on social media, asking the franchise to reconsider their choice of starting quarterback.

Fans want Mac Jones to take over from Brock Purdy

Earlier this year, Brock Purdy signed a 5-year, $265 million contract extension, but as the season started, injury concerns pushed him aside. On the other hand, Jones signed a 2-year, $8.4 million deal. One fan wanted an exchange and mentioned, “Should Mac Jones get the Brock Purdy contract now or what? Lmao.”

Another fan was pumped up about the backup’s fiery performance against the Rams. He mentioned, “Mac Jones taking Purdys job on live tv omg.” The Rams could not register even a single sack in the first half, as Mac Jones completed 15 of 23 passes for 179 yards to give the 49ers a massive 17-7 lead at halftime.

Fire Brock Purdy immediately. Make Mac Jones the QB asap,” wrote another fan. But one netizen highlighted the exact issue that will make it a hard decision.

The only thing keeping the 49ers from not riding with Mac Jones is $265 million,” they wrote. No one pays a signal caller $50+ million to keep him on the bench.

It becomes even harder as the Niners failed to qualify for the playoffs last year. So, Shanahan is on the hot seat in 2025. But yes, Jones’ performance in the first half was enough to pump everyone up. No one expected such domination. One fan commented, “Mac Jones eclipsed Brock Purdy’s stats against the rams last year in 1 quarter. I’m just saying @grantcohn.”

So, the Niners definitely have the advantage with such a strong backup. The only thing that will define their season is how they utilize it.
