Will Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets get their star “Mr. Irrelevant” this time? Every year, at the end of the NFL draft, which lasts for three days, seven rounds with over 250 selections, the team select their “Mr. Irrelevant.

Unlike the coveted titles of “No. 1 pick” or “first rounder,” Mr. Irrelevant may not hold the same prestige, but it grants the chosen player the chance to join an NFL team. Last year, Desjuan Johnson of Rams was given the chance. However, the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant to the San Francisco 49ers, was in the news a lot last year. Brock Purdy proved his worth in the league, leading the Niners in the Super Bowl LVIII in his second year. So, will the Jets receive their own Purdy this time?

According to a sports media brand, uSTADIUM, on their official X account, “Comp picks are out. #Jaguars get the first comp, #Jets get Mr. Irrelevant.” The Jets recently acquired three compensatory picks for the upcoming NFL 2024 Draft, one of which is pick No. 257 – the final selection in the draft, also known as “Mr. Irrelevant.” So, this means that Aaron Rodgers might get his “Mr. Irrelevant” who could turn out to be a star player like Brock Purdy. However, there is no guarantee that the Jets will actually make a selection with this pick, as their GM, Joe Douglas, has a track record of trading Day 3 picks in previous drafts.

In addition to the last pick No. 257, the Jets are also awarded compensatory picks at No. 218 in the sixth round, and No. 256 in the seventh round. With these additions, the Jets now boast a total of eight picks in the year’s Draft. These picks are distributed across different rounds, including one each in the first and third rounds, and two each in the fourth, sixth and seventh rounds. As per NFL Draft pick history, “The only other time the Jets had their last pick in the draft was 1969 when they picked DT Fred Zirkle out of Duke.

This placekicker is still active (currently a free agent). He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Bucs in 2020, and presently ranks seventh among active scoring players. Since 1976, only five Mr. Irrelevants have played more than 50 career NFL games. Purdy had a phenomenal year this time. He led the league in yards per attempt (9.6), and passer rating (113.0). Besides Purdy and Succop, players like Jacque MacKinnon (1961), who “totaled almost 2,500 yards from scrimmage for his career,” and Bill Fischer (1948), who earned a Pro Bowl nod, all were selected as the Mr. Irrelevants. However, with their spectacular performances, they won hearts and history of the NFL.
