The highly celebrated sportscaster is now approaching the 80s. He has devoted a large portion of his life to his work. The dedication and passion is absolutely commendable. Michaels definitely has collected a few recent slip-ups. For instance, when Andrew Marchand asked him about his retirement, he answered with a question. He said, “Let me ask you a question: How do I sound to you? I don’t think I’m a lot different than I have been through the years.”

But now, fans have a clearer picture as he commented on his retirement day. He said, “As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing next year. There’s no question about that in my mind. Look when I’m done. It’s the way John Madden was done.” He added, “Two words and a contraction: ‘It’s time.’ I don’t need any parade or that nonsense.”

Not to mention, he is being compared to a former NFL player as his statement was that he doesn’t want a grand ceremony or any big speech for retiring. The GOAT Tom Brady had a big ceremony when he was officially retired and also gave a decent-length speech. Regardless, even though Michaels has been loved throughout his career, recently, he received criticism over his commentary.

Al Michaels was under fire recently, for his perceived lackluster commentary during the New Orleans Saints vs. Jacksonville Jaguars game. Fans expressed disappointment over Michaels’ uninspired narration of a touchdown by Jaguars’ Travis Etienne. The backlash, however, fired up when Jacksonville kicker Riley Patterson scored a 36-yard-field goal as “time expired for the win” and the NBC announcer chose a subdued call. Michaels casually stated that he was “very happy” with his performance in a text to the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand. Well, fans were expecting more from the seasoned commentator.

With a storied career since 1986, this backlash clearly highlighted the high standards and changing expectations of audiences for sports broadcasters. However, this has never been an ongoing thing as he is mostly loved by all. In his response to the criticism, Michaels quoted at a point, “A lot of folks who understand this industry are annoyed with the over-the-top yelling that makes a game sound like an offshoot of talk radio. I’m in that corner, but there are others who obviously think otherwise. Don’t you find it ironic that the most understated announcer of all time was the iconic Pat Summerall. And before that— Ray Scott. And lots of folks still yearn for that style. One size doesn’t fit all.”
