Andy Reid’s Chiefs are now 0-2 in the preseason after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Saturday game ended with a 15-16 score, but the real concern was not the loss, but the growing list of injuries Andy Reid has on the Chiefs roster.

“As far as the injuries go, Alohi, in warmups, had some low-back spasms,” Reid said to the reporters after the game. “So he didn’t play, and then Tyreke Smith tweaked his right hamstring. I’m not sure how bad that is, but it was bad enough that he couldn’t continue there.”

Alohi Gilman’s injury would be extremely concerning for the Chiefs, as he is the veteran who was added to the roster this offseason.

The Chiefs will run more tests to find out how serious the injury is. The back issue could also affect his availability for Kansas City’s preseason finale against the Seahawks on Friday. With Gilman out, Xavier Nwankpa and Jaden Hicks started at safety, while Christian Roland-Wallace moved into the slot cornerback role.

The 28-year-old Gilman spent his first five NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. In 2025, he played for both the Chargers and the Baltimore Ravens. Last season, he played in all 17 games and made 90 tackles. He also broke up nine passes, forced one fumble, and scored one defensive touchdown.

Losing a player like him will be a major setback for them. The team already has Gilman on a three-year contract this offseason, as the team was already pretty high on him.

Back in April, talking to the Kansas City Star, GM Brett Veach compared Gilman’s role to the type of safety the Chiefs previously had with Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid.

“I think (Gilman) fits that mold, and when you had success, you had a guy like the Badger and you had a guy like Justin Reid back there. Alohi fits that bill,” Veach said.

Then there’s Tyreke Smith, who did not finish Saturday’s game against the Buccaneers because of a hamstring injury. He hurt his hamstring in the second half and left the game.

Before leaving, Smith made two tackles. The Chiefs kept him out for the rest of the game to avoid making the injury worse. The injury could also keep Smith out of Kansas City’s preseason finale against the Seahawks on Friday.

Smith is competing for a backup spot at defensive end. The Chiefs have several good players ahead of him, so his absence from Saturday’s game was not a major problem for the team.

George Karlaftis is the main player at the position after recording 66 pressures in 2025. Felix Anudike-Uzomah is also back after missing last season with a hamstring injury. Rookie Mason Thomas, a second-round pick, has impressed with his quickness and could get playing time in passing situations.

But those are not the only injury concerns the Chiefs have.

Another big injury concern for Andy Reid

One of the Chiefs’ biggest injury concerns is Ashton Gillotte. He suffered a ruptured plantar fascia in his foot, which will keep him out for the rest of the preseason. The injury could also affect his availability for the first regular-season game.

His absence could hurt the defense because he is useful against the run. If he cannot return soon, other defensive ends will have to play more snaps.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah could get more chances because of Gillotte’s injury. He missed most of last season after a hamstring injury but is healthy again. He also recorded a sack against the Buccaneers, showing that he can help the Chiefs’ defensive line.

Rookie R Mason Thomas could get more playing time because of Gillotte’s injury. The second-round pick has shown good speed and quickness, so the Chiefs may give him more chances to prove himself.

With their defense already looking thin, coach Reid will be hoping there are no more casualties in the preseason. The NFL season is just three weeks away, and if at this juncture the team suffers a big injury, the Chiefs’ season could get affected.
