Easton Stick got sacked by KCC’s Charles Omenihu, and with just 4:56 remaining in the first quarter, Mike Edwards scooped the ball and returned a fumble 97 yards. That went on to become the longest scoop and score of the season (and the third-longest in Chiefs history). “That was a long drive, I’m not going to lie. Charles made a heck of a play,” Edwards said after his side won 13-12. “It was a big play for us and started us off early.” 

Let us not forget that Steve Spagnuolo loves smart, versatile safeties, and Mike Edwards is the kind of hybrid player who can drop into coverage, hit like a linebacker, and sniff out big plays. With Kansas City entering a season where Patrick Mahomes may not be able to bail them out every week, the defense has to stay elite. Edwards is back to make sure that the script stays intact. Too subtle?

Well, post the 2023 season, Edwards split the next season between the Bills and the Buccaneers, but now he is back to Kansas City to continue his story under Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, which coincidentally also means a reunion with his college coach Matt House, who was the defensive coordinator at Kentucky at the time. Tom Pelissero first reported this last week when he tweeted:

“Reunion: Veteran safety Mike Edwards is signing with the #Chiefs on a one-year deal, per source. Back with the team he won a Super Bowl with two years ago.” The Chiefs, too, welcomed him back on X, “Team Edwards once again. Welcome back to KC.” Edwards is ready to take things a notch higher from where he’d left—starting five out of the 17 games he played with 51 tackles (32 solo), one sack, one interception, and two fumble recoveries. But history doesn’t care about your legacy—and apparently, neither does Devin McCourty. On Pro Football Talk, the former Patriots safety, McCourty, dropped a shocking opinion:

“I thought the year Denver had surprised a lot of people, but if they can continue to build through the draft and have these players, I think they can honestly be a team that we’re looking and we’re saying, ‘Man, they could easily win this division this year because of what they’ve been able to do.'”

Translation? The Mahomes era might be closer to its expiration date than we thought. That loss in the 2024 Super Bowl was more than a simple bruise; It could have been the start of a gradual unravelling.

McCourty laid out the logic: The Broncos have finally crawled out from under the Russell Wilson contract disaster. They’ve got Bo Nix on a rookie deal, which means cash to spend and time to grow with a front office that has suddenly become capable. And let’s not forget, the Broncos didn’t just flirt with beating the Chiefs in 2024; They demolished them 38-0 in Week 18. Yes, it was against backups, but Andy Reid was still coaching, and that final score was one of the worst of his entire career.

If Mahomes falls, it won’t be a crash, it’ll be a disaster. Think 2023 Eagles. Think final-season Rodgers in Green Bay. Great teams don’t always explode, they just fade: 10-1 becomes 11-6.
