By the time the game ended, Baker Mayfield did something for the franchise that even Ton Brady couldn’t achieve in his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The whole internet is on the Baker Mayfield bandwagon right now. And why not? The QB threw for more than 300 yards in a playoff game. This is something that not a lot of QBs weren’t able to achieve in their time with the Bucs. A post from the NFL on CBS’s account highlights just how instrumental the QB has been to the Bucs’ success. That became more apparent when he threw for 337 yards and got 3 touchdowns for the team. Even Tom Brady didn’t have more than 300 yards and 3 TDs in a single game. No one imagined this coming from a team that went to the playoffs with a 9-8 record in the regular season.

Brady and Mayfield are the only QBs in the Bucs’ history to have more than 300 yards in a playoff game. Surpassing Brady wasn’t a possibility for Mayfield till the fourth quarter when he threw a pass to Chris Godwin for a touchdown. Not only did he break a record, but he also beat the Eagles 32-9.

Per Statmuse, Brady had 381 yards in a wild card game against the Washington Commanders back in 2021. He had 2 TDs in that game. However, in the game in which he had 3 TDs, he had 280 yards under his belt. That was in the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers in 2021. But coming back to the present, Mayfield’s blowout win over the Eagles came with 22-36 completed passes and a passer rating of 119.8.

The only QB in the NFC South to make history

To start things off, Baker Mayfield became the only QB this season in the NFC South to have a playoff victory under his belt. In 2020, he led the Cleveland Browns to a playoff win since their 1994 playoffs season. Come the Eagles game, Mayfield did it again. He came back as a victor of the wild card game. When no one believed in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their QB1 changed everything and shocked the football community.

“There’s something about whether it’s you’re an underdog or a road game, just having your backs against the wall and knowing it’s just your team versus everybody else when you’re counted out, and it’s always fun to be in that role.” said Mayfield in an interview with CBS.

He finished the season with 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Safe to say that Mayfield did his best to fill in Tom Brady’s shoes. Before the game, Baker Mayfield was dealing with an ankle injury as well as a rib injury. His heroics don’t need any more clarification after he battled through his injury and won the wild card game.

One take at a time

Basketball has stuck with me ever since I was a kid. I remember watching Kobe Bryant sometime in 2008 and being blown away. Like every kid my age, I was utterly taken aback by his moves and abilities as an athlete.
