The inquiry was regarding a missing amount of $12 million, according to KXAN. While the internal details were unknown, it was clear that some mishap had tainted the father-son bond. Mayfield may have strained his relations after the filing, but he grew up with his parents’ full support and motivation, especially his mother. Gina Mayfield and her son have been on each other’s side throughout, be it his late-night arrest in 2007 or Gina’s terrifying car accident in 2015.

Baker Mayfield and his wife’s $12 million petition

In August of last year, Mayfield and his wife, Emily, demanded details about a “potential misappropriation of 12 million (dollars)” by a Texas investment firm. The sad part was that the quarterback’s family members were involved in the organizations named in the petition. The defendants were Camwood Capital Management Group, Camwood Ventures, Texas Contract Manufacturing Group, Unitech, Apex Machining, and Lor-Van.

The couple wanted to check on the athlete’s money and if it had been invested correctly, as promised. The legal document read, “Petitioners simply do not know if their money has been properly and competently invested, has been stolen or otherwise misappropriated, or something in between.”

He’s supported Mayfield’s journey, so it was heartbreaking when the news broke of his firm being involved in the petition. But even after all this, his mother has been the one constant in the quarterback’s life.

When Gina Mayfield survived a car accident

In 2015, while the future Cleaveland Browns draft was gearing up for his college game, a somber phone call from his father caused his world to crash. He was at his college in California when the news of his mother being in a car accident in Greenville that had eventually cost the lives of three others. Gina and her sister were seriously injured in the mishap, with Gina suffering from damage to the intestines and stomach. Fortunately, Gina recovered from the accident in due time, but this incident had a lasting impact on Mayfield.

Two years later, Mayfield had to face another adversity. While on an excursion with his girlfriend, the quarterback was arrested for unruly behavior while inebriated. According to reports, he argued with the police officers and even attempted to run but was soon detained. Apart from the negative attention the incident attracted, Mayfield was specifically disheartened at the call he had to make to his parents. In an interview with ESPN, he confessed: “It was a rough one because that’s the first people you think about letting them down… first thing I said was, ‘I’m sorry.’ And so, that was hard to even get those words out of my mouth.”

Mayfield later apologized for his actions and has since expressed remorse for putting his parents through the situation. All said and done, an athlete’s life can be challenging, but having a supportive family can make the route much easier.
