The Chicago Bears notched their second straight one-point win this week, sneaking past the Washington Commanders 25-24, but it didn’t come without some postgame drama. During ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast, Troy Aikman stirred the pot when he called DeAndre Swift’s 55-yard touchdown “lucky.” That didn’t sit too well with the Bears’ running back, who had a pretty direct response for the Cowboys legend.

On Friday, Bears’ running back DeAndre Swift addressed the “Just luck on Chicago’s part” comment by former quarterback Tory Aikman. “I don’t think it was luck, I made it happen … I got nothing to say about that,” the RB said.

With just over 10 minutes left and the Bears facing third-and-4 near midfield, Caleb Williams dumped a swing pass to Swift in the flat. The running back slipped past a tackler and tore down the sideline for a 55-yard touchdown.

That play ended up cutting Washington’s lead to 24-22 and setting the stage for the Bears’ last-second, game-winning field goal.

If you want to nitpick, you could call it lucky. Washington’s defense blew the coverage and took some awful angles, letting Swift find daylight. But football is about capitalizing on these little mistakes. And that’s exactly what Swift did. Calling it luck just undersells the skill it takes to turn a broken play into six points.

And Aikman’s criticism fell on quarterback Caleb Williams just as much as it did on Swift. Williams caught wind of it, too, and decided to have a little fun with it. The QB posted a photo gallery on Instagram featuring highlights from the win, with a not-so-subtle caption: “Nation’s Cap good being back! ‘It was lucky’ — TA. ‘Whooptie Doo.’”

When asked about it later, Williams smiled and brushed it off. “It’s fun. Fun trolls. I was messing around. D’Andre made a great play. Obviously, he (Aikman) had some stuff to say about us or me. We came out victorious in the end. Made a little fun moment out of it, and that was about it,” he said.

Both Williams and Swift were crucial in Chicago’s win, but fans got a scare later in the week when Swift unexpectedly showed up on the injury report. We finally have an update on the matter.

Bears expect Swift to play vs the Saints

After not being listed on Wednesday, the running back was suddenly marked “limited” on Thursday with a groin issue. Something the fans never want to see midweek. Head coach Ben Johnson tried to calm nerves, saying he fully expects Swift to play Sunday against the Saints. And according to insider Adam Schefter, that confidence seems well-founded.

The Bears believe that Swift should be ready to suit up come the Saints game. That’s a huge sigh of relief for Bears fans. The player has quietly been one of Chicago’s most important offensive weapons this year, leading the team in both rushing and receiving in last week’s game.

Against Washington, he piled up 108 rushing yards, 67 receiving yards, and that game-changing touchdown. Through five games, he’s already tallied nearly 300 yards on the ground, two rushing touchdowns, and 152 receiving yards with another score.

Ben Johnson knows just how vital Swift’s been.

“Oh, he was huge. I mean, this is the best, the most efficient we’ve ran the ball all year,” Johnson said of Swift after last week’s performance.

Now, the Bears will need that same spark against a tough Saints defense that allows just 114 rushing yards per game. If DeAndre Swift is on the field and healthy, Chicago’s got a real shot at keeping this little win streak alive.
