Ben Johnson doesn’t want the Chicago Bears to repeat a season like 2024. Period. Since taking over as head coach in January 2025, that much has been evident. And with their latest moves, the Bears appear to be cooking up something big for draft night. A new update from an NFL insider suggests Chicago is eyeing a specific target—and it wouldn’t be surprising if that target is an offensive weapon for Caleb Williams.

We’ve already explored this possibility in our mock draft for the Bears, and now NFL insider Dov Kleiman has echoed similar sentiments in his latest update. Kleiman posted: “The Bears are looking to move up from pick No. 10 and six teams ahead of them are open to a deal, per Pat Leonard.” He also asked readers, “Who is Chicago targeting?”

It’s no secret that Ben Johnson has one of the sharpest offensive minds in the league. He’s looking for wide receivers and running backs to support Caleb Williams, who had a challenging 2024 season. Though Williams threw for 3,571 yards and 20 touchdowns, his completion percentage hovered around just 62%. On top of that, the Bears struggled with their run game.

So, as previously mentioned in our Chicago Bears mock draft, there’s a strong chance the Bears are targeting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. Why? Jeanty himself offered a clue: “I think the earliest that I will go is No. 6, that’s my belief. That would be the Raiders at that pick or somebody else trading up to get in front of them, possibly. I think that’s what’s going to happen.” That’s what Jeanty told reporters when asked where he might land on Day 1 of the draft.

Now rewind to Kleiman’s report. Does it start to make sense? It’s all about connecting the dots. The Bears may be looking to trade up from the No. 10 pick to somewhere around the No. 4 or 5 spot—right in the range Jeanty believes he’ll be drafted. It’s a realistic match, especially considering Jeanty’s production: 374 rushing attempts for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns. Besides Jeanty, the Bears might also be eyeing linebacker Abdul Carter—possibly at the No. 3 spot. But that scenario looks less likely, as the Giants, who hold that pick, are reportedly not interested in trading down.

Still, in a draft like this, anything can happen. Whether it’s Carter or Jeanty, the Bears seem ready to make a splash. Another layer to the story? NFL insider Peter Schrager has reported that the Bears are ready with a trade strategy for Day 1.

Caleb Williams’ Bears are ready with a trade strategy for day one

According to Schrager, Bears GM Ryan Poles could execute a deal with his longtime friend Chris Ballard, GM of the Indianapolis Colts. As per reports, the Bears might trade their 10th overall pick, while the Colts move up to secure a tight end—or another high-priority position. In return, the Bears would receive multiple assets, including a third-round pick.

That third-rounder could position them to select standout tight end Colston Loveland, further bolstering the offense around Caleb Williams. The Bears are also reportedly interested in drafting Jordan Burch, the edge rusher from Oregon. If these reports hold true, GM Ryan Poles appears poised to reshape the roster with a bold, calculated strategy—using both top-end offensive talent and smart trades to surround Caleb Williams with the tools he needs to succeed.

It’s a bit of a tangled web for now. But draft night is almost here—and once it begins, all the pieces will start falling into place.
