In a special segment on the Nightcap podcast, Shannon Sharpe, Chad Johnson, and Iso Joe Johnson commemorated what would’ve been late NBA Legend Kobe Bryant’s 48th birthday by sharing anecdotes and instances about Kobe’s life. During the segment, Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson revealed just how big a part Kobe Bryant played in the star WR extending his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Johnson detailed how the five-time NBA champion directly confronted him about his Cincinnati standoff at South Beach’s iconic News Cafe. The six-time Pro Bowler expected a casual chat, but the Lakers great gave him a blunt, one-hour reality check instead.

“The other picture I showed you, me and Kobe at News Cafe having lunch. This is when I was acting a fool trying to get out of the Bengals, remember? I was trying to get traded. He was like, ‘Man, that’s not how you do that. That’s not how you conduct yourself.’ And, he got on my head, man.

“A good hour of lashing out. And man, he was so smart, man. Very methodical, very strategic in the way he did things and the way he carried himself. I couldn’t move like that. I’m too friendly, I’m too sociable. Like he’s really closed off to everybody,” Chad Johnson said of Kobe Bryant’s contribution to him staying at the Bengals. 

The context behind Kobe’s message was the widely publicized fall-off between Chad Johnson and the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2008 offseason. Chad Johnson was coming off a franchise-record 1,440 receiving yards campaign in 2007. So when Chad pleaded publicly on TV with Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) owner Daniel Snyder. Washington offered a 2008 first-round pick to the Bengals; however, Cincinnati owner Mike Brown was having none of it and refused the trade entirely. 

Kobe Bryant’s reality check was inspired by his own personal experience. In May 2007, an aggravated Kobe publicly announced that he wanted to be traded from the Lakers during radio appearances with ESPN and KLAC. 

Bryant did not immediately cease public drama following May 2007; in June 2007, an amateur video recorded in a Newport Beach shopping center parking lot was leaked to the internet, showing Bryant criticizing GM Mitch Kupchak and center Andrew Bynum. 

However, when Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss agreed in principle to a trade package that would send Kobe to the Detroit Pistons, Bryant exercised his no-trade clause to veto the deal. Bryant remained with Los Angeles, played the 2007–08 season, won NBA MVP, and was paired with All-Star Pau Gasol following a February 2008 trade with Memphis. Together, they led the Lakers to the 2008 NBA Finals and secured back-to-back NBA championships in 2009 and 2010.  

Having navigated a similar ruckus, Kobe had an idea of how Chad Johnson’s media stunts would backfire against Bengals management. Especially with NFL contracts, which give full control over a player’s status and compensation, not being as player-friendly as NBA contracts that have guaranteed contracts and trade clauses. 

In the aftermath of Chad Johnson and Kobe Bryant’s lunch, Ochocinco stayed with the Bengals for 3 more seasons before his move to the New England Patriots.
