Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired in 2021, the Pittsburgh Steelers have vested their offensive coordinators with all the control to run the offense. Whether it was Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Justin Fields, or even future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson, the Steelers have been hesitant in giving QBs control to call plays. However, it could all change once Aaron Rodgers lands in Pittsburgh. Though there is no guarantee Rodgers will sign with the Steelers, if he does, then a possible power struggle will ensue.
See, it was almost certain that Russ was going to come back for another season with the Steelers. But once leaks started to come out of his disgruntled relationship with Arthur Smith, the Steelers chose to move on from him. Even during the season, there were problems between the two. Smith restricted Wilson from checking out his playbook and wanted full autonomy of the offense. He may have managed to pull it off against a 13-year veteran. However, those similar tactics apparently won’t work with a 20-year veteran like Rodgers.
Longtime Pittsburgh reporter Mark Kaboly, on his podcast Kaboly+Mack, gave an early reality check to Smith. “Do you think the playbook matters to Aaron Rodgers? Because I really do believe that it’s going to be Aaron Rodgers’ playbook. He’s going to call what he wants to call, and that might be a little bit of a battle that would be interesting to see.” Given that Rodgers has been around the league for two decades. Won 4-NFL MVP honors, one Super Bowl, and multiple other accolades. It shouldn’t really be a surprise if he demands full control of the offense.

And to be honest, having someone like Rodgers call plays wouldn’t really be a bad decision for the Steelers. Smith can definitely continue doing his job as OC. Meanwhile, Rodgers can leverage his knowledge wherever needed to ensure it’s the Steelers who benefit from it. Considering they have been so patient to wait for Rodgers, it’s difficult to see him not getting fully involved with the offense. But again, all of these are just speculations. First, Rodgers needs to sign with the Steelers and then look to collaborate with Smith.

Aaron Rodgers all but confirms his rumored move to the Steelers
Honestly, it’s been frustrating, to say the least, for everyone talking about Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers. However, days, weeks, and months have flown by, but the news of Rodgers finally signing with the Steelers is yet to be forthcoming. In an interview on the YNK podcast, Rodgers was asked by a young NFL fan whether he would consider joining the Chicago Bears. His answer, as you might have already predicted, was nah. But that wasn’t all Rodgers said to that young Bears fan. He proceeded to drop a major hint to him about potentially lining up against them very soon. “No, but I believe there’s a team that might play in Chicago this year, for a road trip,” Rodgers said.
When asked whether he would care to name that team, Rodgers said, “I don’t know, I’m not sure. I’m going to check it out.” Just to let you know, he had a smirk on his face the whole time. It’s like he knew, the fan knew, and everyone knew what the answer was. But none wanted to spell it out. It’s the Steelers who have a road game against the Bears in week 12. So, maybe it’s only a matter of time before Rodgers arrives in Pittsburgh to get this over with. As for the Steelers, they would finally get the man they had been waiting for almost an eternity now.
