Bill Belichick, the well-known football coach, recently shared his thoughts on Drake Maye, the newly drafted quarterback for the New England Patriots. Belichick shed light on both Maye’s strengths and weaknesses as a potential player. He described Maye as having “good size” and being “very talented,” praising his ability to make big plays.

According to analyst Greg Cosell, Maye was hailed as the “toolsiest” quarterback in the draft. However, there were concerns about his performance, particularly regarding his accuracy.

Greg Cosell said, “May missed too many routine layup throws with poor ball location, had a tendency to drift in the pocket, created his own pressure.” Greg raised concerns about Maye’s accuracy and decision-making. He noted that Maye “missed too many easy ones,” referring to routine throws that Maye failed to execute.

This statement mirrors Belichick’s thought, as Bill said, “His footwork needs a lot of work, You can see here his feet are all over the place. Never resets his feet, never really gets set to throw. Gets stripped sacked. Too much hopping around.”

Despite these critiques, Belichick praised Maye’s potential, saying, “Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen, he’s been doing that for quite a while. We’ll see about that. I think there are some similarities in terms of the size and athleticism. Josh Allen’s a pretty special player.”

Belichick also highlighted Maye’s youth and lack of experience, noting that he was the second-youngest quarterback prospect in the draft. He focused on the importance of patience and development and said that Maye would need time to adjust to the demands of professional football.

The current head coach of the New England Patriots, Jerod May, shared his thoughts on Bill Belichick’s opinion about Drake Maye.

Mayo’s take on Drake and Belichick

Mayo said that no quarterback comes into the league fully prepared to play. He further said, “I actually think Coach (Belichick) said that — like, the only player that he knows that was ready to play once he came into the league was Lawrence Taylor. And so, it’s very hard to sit here and say, ‘Alright, this guy’s going to play.”

Jerod said that Drake is going to compete, the Patriots have a solid quarterback room and they’re going to compete, and the best player will play. Maye, drafted after Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, is seen as the Patriots’ long-term solution. However, how the team handles his development in the early stages is to be seen.

Jerod also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Bill. He further said, “I’m sure the fans are very excited to hear from a guy like that and see the other side of Bill.” Mayo’s reaction to Belichick’s breakdown of Drake Maye reflects confidence in the Patriots’ quarterback situation and appreciation for Belichick’s expertise.
