Bill Belichick can finally breathe a sigh of relief as after all these years, he might have had an exciting game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bailey Zappe was at the forefront of a game that might inspire some hope in the franchise for the future. The Pats have a close lead against the Steelers, but the game was at a critical point. However, this was Zappe’s best game of his career so far and it looked like the old-school Bill Belichick-Tom Brady offense was witnessing a comeback.

The game was a subtle reminder of the Tom Brady era as the Pats were finally doing what they were once known for. Fortunately, this resurgence led the Pats to a much-needed win because, at this point, Belichick’s job was on the line. Interestingly, for the Pats and Belichick, Zappe broke one of Brady’s records in this game. Belichick didn’t give Zappe a chance to play till now and he had his reasons behind it, and they had to do with fair treatment of Mac Jones. Alas, Jones didn’t produce, so Zappe had to step up.

An interesting tweet is floating on the internet in the wake of this game. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN, Bailey Zappe has become the first Pat since Tom Brady to have 3 passing touchdowns in the first half of the game. The last time it was done was when Brady played with the Pats in 2018. The first TD pass came in the 1 quarter when Zappe slipped an 11-yard pass to Ezekiel Elliott. Another 8-yard pass to Hunter Henry came in the 2 quarter, followed by another 24-yard pass to Henry in the same quarter.

Speaking of Hunter Henry, the New England Patriots TE had quite a game because he also broke a record on his own. Henry became the 5 player in the NFL to score 2 receiving touchdowns in a single game on his birthday. This came after 30 seasons or so and Henry has joined the ranks of Terrell Owens, DaVonta Smith, and Isaac Bruce.

When Belichick was asked as to why Zappe didn’t play till now, he said that he wanted to give Mac Jones a chance. Unfortunately for him, the QB wasn’t able to get the results needed from him. So Belichick had to go with Zappe. Belichick mentioned that Zappe ‘worked hard all year’, so naturally, it was his turn to shine.

Interestingly enough, Mike Tomlin is now 3-10 against Bill Belichick, and the Patriots have miraculously stolen the game against the Steelers with a final score of 21-18 and overcame a 5-game losing streak.

Is Zappe in the spotlight now?

The Pats QB passed for 240 yards and completed 19 out of 28 passes he made. He came out with a completion rate of 67.9% and threw for 3 touchdowns as well. He was only intercepted once throughout the game, and this was arguably his best game of the season. So much so that the stats he put up are reminiscent of TB12’s numbers.

The Pats are 3-10 after this game and are surely missing the playoffs this year. But dominating the Steelers would still boost their morale for the next season. Till this point, everyone in the Pats were fighting to keep their jobs and it’s going to be like this for a while.

Belichick’s attempts to mold Zappe into a franchise QB are showing results. He might not reach Brady levels, but this one game showed just how much potential Zappe has. There were also some rumors of Bill Belichick’s firing in the following season. The truth behind this still needs some validation. His contract is lucrative, but there isn’t much information available on it. This makes speculating even harder.

One take at a time

Basketball has stuck with me ever since I was a kid. I remember watching Kobe Bryant sometime in 2008 and being blown away. Like every kid my age, I was utterly taken aback by his moves and abilities as an athlete.
