Billionaire Owner Jerry Jones ‘At Fault’ as Cowboys Could Be Forced to Draft “Unfettered Free Agent” Dak Prescott’s Replacement

In a recent Dallas Cowboys presser, Jerry Jones revealed his all-in approach. One of the reporters asked Jones about why the team hasn’t given Dak Prescott or CeeDee Lamb a long-term deal. To this, the Cowboys owner replied that he’s waiting for the “leaves to fall and more action” before he acts. Shedding line of this approach, Tom Pelissero made an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show.
While it is no news now that Dak Prescott is in the final year of his contract with the Dallas team, the fact that Jones verdicted such statements surely left many scratching their heads. After all, Prescott and Lamb have been the core players for the Cowboys camp. On one hand, Lamb has been admitted to the Pro Bowl two times in his four seasons with the Cowboys. On the other hand, Dak Prescott has nearly thrown for 30,000 yards with 202 touchdowns in eight seasons.
Where the quarterback is concerned, Jones has already franchise-tagged him twice and they cannot do the same next year. Concerning the same, Pelissero revealed that Prescott’s income is set to boost about 144% next year regardless of the fact whether the Cowboys extend him or not. This was the analyst’s way of highlighting the importance Prescott holds in the league and if not capitalized might lead to big problems for the Dallas Cowboys.

Stressing on the same, Eisen said, “Would have been helpful to maybe create a cap space by reassigning your guys that are going to be only more expensive as you wait for the leaves to fall.” To which Pelissero then pointed out how the Cowboys’ particular practice of giving players a long-term deal and then ending it prematurely is becoming their downfall.

“He’s [Prescott] going to become a free agent. He would be, because technically they had to use the second tag because they didn’t sign the deal in time, they didn’t paper it in time. So, it would be a third tag, not a second one for Dak next year, which is 144% of his current cap number which is like close to $90 million,” said Pelissero.
“He’s going to be a true unfettered free agent. He’s going to be the Kirk Cousins unless they’re able to ramp this thing up.” While not directly voicing out, the host and guest of the show seem to hold Jerry Jones and team at fault for not taking the right steps at the right time. Amidst this massive issue, the Cowboys have other problems to deal with as well that might create more inconsistency within the team.

The Dallas Cowboys are in a crunch with delay in deals concerning big players
While critically analysing the lack of deal with Prescott from the Cowboys side, Pelissero made sure to decipher the reasons behind the same. One of them was that they still must deal with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, who are also looking for long-term deals. This year, Lamb is set to make about $17.9 million and by next year, that number might be as high as $30 million, which the Cowboys might not want to deal with.

Also, Lamb has not been showing up to the voluntary training camp and is holding out to get a more lucrative deal. However, as far as Dak Prescott is concerned, a reporter caught hold of him at the Children’s Cancer Fund and asked him the questions regarding the uncertainty surrounding the Cowboys.
The QB framed his conversation with Jerry Jones as, “We had a great conversation that put us aligned, and, and where we are and moving forward, and where we are at this moment I should say, and uh, we’ll address moving forward as that comes about.” Prescott’s statement gives hope that something is going on between Jones and the QB, which might end up on a positive note.
