On Sunday, something is going to happen which has not happened since 2020. Patrick Mahomes will not be starting for the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time in 3 years. Head Coach Andy Reid revealed that the 2x Super Bowl MVP will not be starting in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a toe injury. Backup QB Blaine Gabbert will be starting instead of him.

The Chiefs may have already clinched a playoff berth, but the outcome of this game will determine the morale with which they will enter the playoffs. Amidst this, Gabbert revealed something that may have led to the Chiefs losing the game against the Denver Broncos in Week 8 of the regular season.

After he was announced as the starting QB for the Sunday Night Football game, reporters quizzed him on how he felt when he was really close to starting when Mahomes was exhibiting flu-like symptoms in Week 8. He said that there was a lot of pride in being a starter but that did not happen. The backup QB confessed that he might have passed the illness he was suffering from on to Mahomes. “He was a little under the weather and I was too. I think I was probably the one that gave it to him.”

Now finally he will get the chance he has been waiting for. Although Mahomes was in full participation in the first practice session of the week, the Chiefs probably decided against letting him play since they did not want to risk him aggravating his toe injury and save him for the postseason games.

After a 6-1 start, the defending Super Bowl champions appeared to be headed for another superbly successful season. But they are now just 4-5 in the last nine games. In the same span, the offense in particular has been erratic, scoring 30 points just once. And in five games, the Chiefs were unable to score at least 20 points. The Chargers one will be an easy game since they are merely finishing out a dismal and unsuccessful campaign. They are only 5-11 on the season and have already fired HC Brandon Staley.

Regarding Kansas City, the greater mystery surrounding them is the team they will play in the opening round of the playoffs. The Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens (1-seed), and Cleveland Browns (5-seed) are all locked into their seeds. With the Chiefs holding the third spot, there are five potential opponents they could face on Wild Card Weekend: Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, or Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chiefs and the Bills have faced off often over the last few seasons, including in their historic 2021 Divisional matchup, so they would be a very familiar opponent. However, the Chiefs haven’t played the Dolphins in the Wild Card round of the playoffs since 1994. Neither Houston nor Indianapolis have much playoff history. In Week 18, they will square off with a playoff spot at stake. Two seasons ago, the Chiefs played the Steelers in the Wild Card Round.
