In February 2021, Andy Reid’s son Britt Reid was involved in a drink-and-drive felony when he crashed a pickup truck into two stopped cars on an interstate entrance ramp, severely injuring a five-year-old girl, Ariel Young. The child suffered a traumatic brain injury, and six people, including Reid, were hurt in the unfortunate crash. Reid’s initial sentence for the crime was seven years, but the sentence was commuted.

According to recent developments, it’s being reported that Britt Reid has got some relaxation from the law and will be mostly under house arrest in 2024 and 2025. Posts on X highlight the statement from the victim’s family, and they are not happy about the decision that Missouri Governor Mike Parsons made.

Britt Reid’s relief draws heavy criticism from Ariel Young’s family

According to the latest developments, Missouri Governor Parsons has commuted the sentence for Britt Reid. The verdict has enraged the girl’s family, and they are “horrified” at the thought of the Chiefs’ former assistant coach getting relaxation from the law.

The child’s mother said, “How would the governor feel if this was his daughter? It seems the laws don’t apply equally to the haves and have-nots. The haves get favors. The have-nots serve their sentence.” She provided this statement through her lawyer, Tom Porto, who has been on the case since it started.

“The family is disgusted, I am disgusted, and I believe… that the majority of the people in the state of Missouri are disgusted by the governor’s actions,” the lawyer told Emily Shugerman of the Daily Beast. To everyone’s surprise, the lawmakers’ decision wasn’t communicated to Ariel Young’s family. The lawyer was unhappy at the thought of it. “To do this and not even contact the family, it’s just disgusting,” he said. “What about the victims of this crime?” 

However, the Missouri Governor commuted the sentence because Reid’s son took accountability.

Britt Reid admitted he was guilty of the charges

At the time of the mishap, Britt Reid admitted that he was responsible and pleaded guilty. “I really regret what I did,” Reid said. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.” Even his father, the KC Chiefs’ head coach, addressed the situation after losing the Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“My heart goes out to all those who were involved in the accident, in particular the family with the little girl who’s fighting for her life,” said Reid to the media and added, “I can’t comment on it any more than what I am here. So the questions you have, I’m going to have to turn those down; but just from a human standpoint, my heart bleeds for everybody involved in that.”

Reid took a plea bargain in 2022 where he would serve three years in prison due to the crash. Upon commuting Reid’s sentence, Missouri Gov. Mike Parsons said that Reid has “completed his alcohol abuse treatment program and has served more prison time than most individuals convicted of similar offenses.”

“If you drink and drive and you put a little girl in a coma… you should have to serve the entire sentence that a judge of this state gave you,” added the family lawyer in conversation with the Daily Beast.

Ariel suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, a parietal fracture, brain contusions, and subdural hematomas and was in a coma for the first two weeks of the accident. 

Andy Reid’s son’s three-year sentence has expired, and he will serve house arrest till October 31, 2025.
