The San Francisco 49ers went against the Minnesota Vikings, lost, and came out pretty scathed. Even though Christian McCaffrey continued with his touchdown streak, Brock Purdy had to ultimately pay an enormous price for this loss. Sadly, the 49ers’ QB1 is not doing so well, and we might not see him for quite some time, or at least till the officials say so.

A recent Twitter video from Fanzine NFL shares more insight on the matter and looks into Brock Purdy’s injury. There are some apprehensions regarding his return in the next game against the Bengals. Here, the world thought they would see a head-to-head game between some of the league’s finest QBs, but the fans might have to wait.

In the last game against the Minnesota Vikings, Brock Purdy suffered a concussion at the hands of Jordan Hicks. This happened earlier in the game when the linebacker tried to tackle Purdy, but Purdy’s helmet took a hit in the process. This allegedly caused the concussion, and Brock Purdy is on the NFL’s concussion protocols and is expected to miss the next game against Joe Burrow and his Bengals squad.

Though the cause of the injury is unclear, Kyle Shanahan and the management are not taking any further risks. If Brock Purdy doesn’t play in the next game, Sam Darnold is set to take his place against the Bengals. According to NFL protocols, if a player suffers such a concussion, he does not play for at least a week. If, by some chance, Purdy makes it to the game, he would have to jump through a lot of hoops.

So, what are these stringent protocols that Purdy must follow?

The tough road to recovery

A concussion is no light matter, and the NFL, along with 49ers management, knows this. It doesn’t take long before the injury might become fatal. Keeping this in mind, the NFL has designed some protocols that are to be adhered to by everyone strictly. There are five steps to recovery per NFL, the first stage being taking rest and gradually increasing physical activity. The second step to recovery is an aerobic workout routine, followed by football-specific no-contact exercises.

After all this is taken care of, the players with concussions can take part in no-contact football drills like throwing, catching, and running. This is done to regain the cognitive balance that the players lost. Finally, after the players feel comfortable following these four steps, they may participate in full football activity. However, full participation in practice is done after the approval of an independent neuro-consultant and the team’s physician.
