A major shakeup is underway in the Minnesota Vikings. With the team in the offseason, they are looking to make changes to their playing staff. The Vikings are reportedly interested in re-signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to an extension this year. But they’re preparing for contingencies, according to a report from NFL Media.

Despite Cousins’ age and recent injury, the Vikings anticipate a competitive market for his services, and they won’t be able to use the franchise tag to retain him. Therefore, the team is developing backup plans in case Cousins becomes too costly to keep, potentially turning to a cheaper veteran option in hopes of finding a hidden gem akin to Baker Mayfield or Geno Smith.

Kirk Cousins to be replaced by Sam Darnold?

Among the names floated as potential alternatives is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold. He was Purdy’s backup QB. He fits the bill of a cost-effective veteran with experience in a system similar to that of Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Additionally, the Vikings may explore drafting a quarterback, with speculation suggesting they could be a team to watch for a trade-up in the first round, although such a move would likely come with a hefty price tag. Sam Darnold is on the track to establish an NFL record as well. And that’s going to happen in tonight’s Super Bowl.

Sam Darnold sets an NFL record.

Sam Darnold has become the first quarterback from the star-studded 2018 NFL Draft class to reach the Super Bowl. The draft class featured five quarterbacks taken in the first round was highly anticipated. The Browns opted for Baker Mayfield over Sam Darnold, both of whom have since played for multiple teams over their six-year NFL careers.

Sam Darnold will hold that distinction as he will serve as the backup to Brock Purdy during Super Bowl LVIII. The 49ers are set to face the Chiefs in Las Vegas, providing Darnold with the opportunity to be part of the big game, even if he doesn’t take the field.
