Myles Garrett‘s stocks couldn’t be any higher. After an insane performance against the Patriots, he now has a total of 10 sacks in 8 games, leading the league alongside the Giants‘ Brian Burns. Even with Garrett proving as one of the top defensive forces of the NFL, the Browns are sitting at 2-6. This has compelled the spectators to talk about a potential rebuild in Cleveland. But GM Andrew Berry’s feelings on all the trade rumors surrounding Garrett might say something else.

“The ship sailed when it didn’t happen last February,” NFL insider Akron Jackson said on the 92.3 The Fan podcast. “The way the contract is laid out, it would be a $41 million dead hit for next year, which is a ton to talk about.” In February, Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns to a Super Bowl contender, which led to him getting a record-breaking contract extension. His deal now averages $40 million per year, including $123.5 million guaranteed money making him one of the highest-paid non-quarterback of the league.
“The ship sailed when it didn’t happen last February… Andrew Berry doesn’t want to be remembered as the guy who traded for Deshaun Watson and traded away Myles Garrett.”

As per Jackson, there’s still a window until the November trade deadline to keep an eye on Myles Garrett’s move. If nothing happens by then, the next six months will be crucial. As they pass, Garrett’s dead cap hit will jump to $41 million, which would make trading him impossible.
It’s tough to imagine the Browns actually taking on that kind of massive cap hit just to trade Myles Garrett, even if the draft picks coming back could help rebuild the roster. Which has compelled the insider to say, “There’s an 80 to 97 percent chance that Myles Garrett is going to be a Cleveland Brown for a long time,” the insider added.

Honestly, it seems way more likely that they will follow the Broncos‘ path with Russell Wilson… Finally cutting ties with Deshaun Watson just to move on from what’s clearly turned out into a mistake.
Berry doesn’t want to repeat a similar mistake
“Andrew Berry doesn’t want to be remembered as the guy who traded for Deshaun Watson and traded away Myles Garrett,” Jackson added on the podcast. Berry and the front desk have already taken up a lot of heat for the Deshaun Watson trade. He even admitted that the trade hasn’t gone the way anyone hoped. Between the injuries, suspensions, and inconsistent play, Watson hasn’t been able to stay healthy or deliver results.
Watson faced a nine-month recovery after undergoing surgery last year. He ruptured his right Achilles tendon this year in rehab. His performance has been restricted since. In his just 19 appearances for Cleveland over 3 years, Watson managed a completion percentage of 61% and scored only 19 touchdowns. After this Jimmy Haslam, didn’t sugarcoat it either.

At the league’s annual meeting earlier this year, Haslam said: “We took a big swing-and-miss with Deshaun. We thought we had the quarterback. We didn’t. And we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So, we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole.”
Cleveland would definitely try to stay away from their past traumas. Even with a frustration like when Garrett slammed his helmet while being on the sidelines against New England, he’s out there playing like a hero. Trade talks around Myles Garrett are definitely heating up because of the team’s struggles and his elite talent. He might ask for a trade to a potential Super Bowl contender. But the move right now is most unlikely.
