Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders made headlines recently when he appeared at Folsom Field before Colorado’s game against Arizona. He surprised many fans who expected him to stay in Cleveland and focus on rehabbing his back injury. Instead, he chose to spend meaningful time with his father, Deion Sanders. And that visit may have carried a deeper message than anyone first realized.

Shedeur Sanders just shared a picture from Deion’s home through his latest Instagram story. The picture showed a calm pool and lake view with large white letters floating on the water spelling out “Proverbs 3:5-6.” A banner behind it read “Legendary,” reinforcing Deion’s continuing message of faith, discipline, and legacy for Shedeur.

The verse in the picture further reads, which was a direct message for his son: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

It’s hard to miss what that message from Deion Sanders implies. Trust, patience, belief, and guidance. All things the young quarterback needs, especially when he’s waiting for his NFL opportunity. When asked why he decided to visit his father, Shedeur’s reply was full of emotion.

“Why are you here?” Deion jokingly asked about his son’s unexpected arrival. To which Sanders responded, “I know you need your son. I know you need some love and affection!” But in reality, things were a bit different.

Later, Shedeur admitted, “I need love, I need to be around family. So, I wanted to just come back home. I think he’s gonna be excited because he doesn’t expect me to come. Enjoying and spending those moments with your family means a lot. I just want to be able to bring that spark, a little bit of happiness in his life.”

Of course, for Sanders, things have been tough. Despite entering the league with major attention – and being drafted in the fifth round – Shedeur still hasn’t taken a regular-season snap. Meanwhile, the Browns’ starter, rookie Dillon Gabriel, continues to struggle.

In his last outing against the New England Patriots, Dillon Gabriel went 21 of 35 for 156 yards and 2 TDs. But his 2 interceptions turned out to be costly and sent the Browns to the sidelines. Inconsistency has haunted the rookie QB, especially in the red zone and on third downs. Meanwhile, those happen to be areas where Shedeur excelled in college. The Browns sit at 2-6 with not much expected to change with Gabriel. So, it’s fair to ask: How long will head coach Kevin Stefanski wait to start Shedeur?

Shedeur Sanders is yet to earn Kevin Stefanski’s trust

Recently, on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, insider Mary Kay Cabot shut down theories that the Browns are hiding something about Shedeur’s injury. According to her, Shedeur’s back tightness is real, and the team isn’t playing games.

“I really don’t think that there is any gamesmanship going on with Shedeur Sanders’ back injury right now,” Cabot said. “The Browns are not foolish enough to make something like this up or fudge it in any way. If Shedeur Sanders is out with tightness in his back, then he has got tightness in his back. And he missed practice again today with that back injury, then that is what is going on there.”

However, Dan Labbe, who also joined the discussion, added a key point – one that many fans are thinking about. He suggested that maybe Kevin Stefanski just doesn’t trust Shedeur to start yet.

“Maybe they still need to see more from him behind the scenes,” said Dan Labbe. “You know, even if he has made a lot of progress, has he made enough progress to be a starting quarterback in the league? Maybe they don’t believe that. I think the easiest answer is probably that.”

Labbe suggested Kevin Stefanski simply wants to see more growth behind the scenes before handing Shedeur the reins. Cabot also agreed but added that it’s a “twofold” situation.

“It’s that they want to get a longer look at Dillon Gabriel, as we’ve been saying,” said Cabot. “They want to look at more of him. Four games isn’t enough. And then the flip side of the coin is the fact that Shedeur probably really isn’t 100% ready yet to go in there and to be able to start games yet. He’s still learning.”

Is that fair? Maybe. But the Browns’ offense ranks near the bottom of the league, and patience has a shelf life. While Shedeur Sanders missed Week 8 with his back injury, Bailey Zappe served as backup. Now all eyes will turn to this week as the Browns prepare to face the New York Jets to see if Shedeur returns as QB2. For now, maybe Deion’s message is the right one. The rookie QB simply needs to trust the process, preparation, and timing.
