“You gotta be ready for everything.” Before the weekend, Shedeur Sanders was more than happy to have reps in the Browns‘ training camp. Certainly, his work of learning the multiple plays overnight and expecting the unexpected paved the way. After Day 4’s “best statistical performance” per ESPN Cleveland, the rookie stood out again on Tuesday with 100% accuracy on his 9 passes for 2 TDs without an INTs. While HC Kevin Stefanski is still giving Sanders 11-on-11 reps in the red zone with the second team, his work has been speaking for itself.

Shedeur Sanders has been giving it his all to return to his ‘legendary’ status from a 144th pick. During the OTAs and the minicamps, he certainly showed why he was nation’s best QB with Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award to show for it. After the camps were over, the former Colorado Buffaloes star even went to Miami and sharpened his blades. All that was visible already on Saturday.

Sanders threw a deep pass to Luke Floriea for a touchdown. Then, he found Diontae Johnson at the end zone for a TD during his red zone work. When the work on the field was done, the rookie gathered all the interviewing kids for a group photo. On Tuesday, his wish to work was visible again. Certainly, making owner Jimmy Haslam re-think washing his hands clean with “(GM) Andrew (Berry) made the call to pick Shedeur.”

On July 29, practice had ended at Berea, Ohio. Cleats were off, towels were over the shoulders, and most of the Browns quarterbacks were already headed back to the locker room. All, except one. As per the Browns insider Brad Stainbrook’s tweet, “Practice ended about 10 minutes ago. #Browns rookie QB Shedeur Sanders still out here.”

Rookie Shedeur Sanders stayed on the field even 10 minutes late, helmet on, eyes locked in, still zipping passes. See for yourself:

However, this isn’t the first time he has done this. Back in June, during the minicamp, he stayed on the ground 20 minutes after the practice ended. And that became his other claim to fame. Fox 8‘s analyst John Sabol claimed that Shedeur Sanders stayed late in the rookie minicamp as well. And the extra work he put in has helped improve his mechanics.

Moreover, he has been working this offseason with only one motto. No distractions! The sole reason he even told his father, ‘Coach Prime’ Deion Sanders, to not visit him at the Browns’ practice. The Colorado rookie once dreamed of beating his father in the draft. But that dream got crushed hard. Now, he is trying to find his way to the QB1 spot. And if that means working harder than his competitors, so be it.

If by any chance, he succeeds in the season, then Haslam would find it hard to answer. For now, he watched his other rookie struggle.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Shedeur Sanders the future of the Browns, or just another rookie with something to prove?

Browns’ owner watches Dillon Gabriel fail

Dillon Gabriel’s drive had promise, crisp movement, and decent pocket presence. Not many believed he was a better QB than Sanders during the draft, but the potential, it was there. But just when it looked like the QB might string together something meaningful, Cameron Mitchell baited him into a throw he’d instantly regret.

On Tuesday, the ball didn’t just float, it practically gift-wrapped itself into Mitchell’s hands in the end zone. Picked clean. Game over, moment seized. And who was watching from the sidelines with a deadpan stare? Jimmy Haslam. He knows that they are yet to find the starter. While Shedeur Sanders is riding high on his 72%+ pass accuracy rate, Gabriel has played for a variety of offenses and still excelled.

If we just look at the rookie competition, Gabriel failed to outclass Sanders on Saturday. He completed 8 of 15 passes with 1 TDs on zero INTs. On the other hand, the Colorado rookie had the best showing. In 11 attempts, he succeeded to pass 8 times for 3 TDs without any interceptions.

On Tuesday, the first day of padded practice, Gabriel completed 6 of 9 passes without any TDs or interceptions. Add in Mitchell’s interception and the numbers become lackluster. The Colorado rookie had a magical 100% pass accuracy in 9 passes, managing to score 2 TDs without any interceptions.

Everything depends on the HC, Kevin Stefanski, now. Ken Carman of 92.3 The Fan has already declared his liking for Shedeur. He claimed that it didn’t matter if he got the reps with the first team, he would get his chance to start. Now, will the coach give chances to his other rookie as well? Well, he might do it. But Jimmy Haslam is another influential figure in the Browns’ building.

What he saw with his own eyes today might be enough for him to make a decision. With Joe Flacco’s position almost fixed as QB1, the rookies still have tough competition in front of them. Not just the position is up for grabs, but they have to make it to the final roster. But the reputation will not help them with that. They have to use their arms to talk now.
